Punteggio 15.5/20 · Da bere 2023-2028, Tim Jackson MW, jancisrobinson.com, Jan 2020
Change of lieu-dit (also spelled Les Echards) from previous vintages. Picked very early on 25 August, which was typical in Volnay for 2018. Just a hint of oxidation here, but doesn’t detract too much. Ripe, rich red and black fruit, graphite and fatness. Sweet and spicy, with peppery tannins and moderate acidity. Fair length. (TJ)

The 2018 Volnay Les Echards replaces the Pauxbois and contains the highest alcohol of the range, at just under 14%. The ripe, opulent bouquet of black cherries and bilberry aromas is forward and generous but needs more delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins, and quite dense and sinewy, leading into a grainy-textured finish. Fine.
