The 2018 Meursault Charmes 1er Cru has an attractive and more open bouquet than its peers with scents of orange blossom, white peach, crushed stone and just a touch of tangerine. Understated at first, this expands in the glass over 10-15 minutes. The palate is well balanced with a well-defined opening. Harmonious and smooth in texture, this has just the right amount of acidity. Maybe it is only on the finish that it just lacks the breeding and panache suggested by the nose. The 2018 Meursault Les Charmes-Dessus 1er Cru is one of the first parcels that Jean-Baptiste Bouzereau picks, since it is one of his most precocious holdings. Curiously, it sports a Puligny-like bouquet of wet limestone and green apple scents. The palate is taut and fresh, offering notes of orange peel, lemon peel and ginger toward the spicy, persistent finish. I suspect this will require four or five years in bottle to really show its class.
