Four ouvrées in Le Charlemagne. Three barrels, of which two were new. Pale amber. Quite delicate nose. Some pungency and depth and then very fresh acidity. Very youthful. Not the fullest-bodied grand cru I have tasted but one of the fresher and I’m sure it will age well. Winemaker Dinel suggests he might pick earlier another time. Opened out in the glass. Lots of chew on the end. (JR)

The 2016 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru was limited to three barrels this year. It has a slightly anonymous bouquet that is driven by the oak at the moment, although there is sufficient fruit to back it up. The palate is well balanced with supple ripe nectarine and blackcurrant notes It feels satisfyingly fresh with just the right amount of salinité on the finish, thus ending on a high. Hopefully the nose will develop more character with time.
