Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2020-2026, Josh Raynolds, Jan 2016

Opaque ruby. Heady, complex bouquet evoking ripe black and blue fruits, licorice, cola, potpourri and smoky minerals. Focused, vivacious and palate-staining black raspberry and boysenberry flavors deepen in the glass. Rich yet lithe and balanced, with excellent finishing clarity, fine-grained tannins and lingering floral and mineral notes. This suave wine was aged in 300-liter French oak barrels for two years.

Another dry vintage. More powerful than the 2012 thanks to the vintage. Smells sweeter and more cherry fruited than the 2012. Peppery and lightly smoky. Opens up with air to a fine fragrance. On the palate you have again that dry, more sober quality, grounding the wine in its rocky terroir. Dry finesse to the long finish. (JH)

The 2011 Clos Martinet is around 65% Garnacha with Syrah and Cariñena, plus a little bit of Cabernet and Merlot. The Martinet vineyard is the first vineyard to be harvested form the Pérez family, and in 2011 it shows ripe aromas of black fruit, earth and spice on a medium to full-bodied palate endowed with abundant, dusty tannins and very good balance. The wine is partly aged in cement vats, though the élevage starts in spring in oak foudres, barriques and clay amphorae before the wine is moved to glass demijohns then finally blended and kept in cement before bottling. 9,250 bottles produced.

Tobacco, chocolate, bramble fruit. Quite delicate and light. Fine and savoury – but perhaps just a little simple. (RH)
