The dark ruby-colored, medium to full-bodied 1999 Nuits-St.-Georges Aux Vignerondes reveals blackberry aromas. It possesses outstanding depth of fruit, yet is so structured and tannic that I am not convinced the fruit will ever overtake the tannin. Oak, licorice, and blackberries can be discerned in this masculine, muscular wine's powerful character. If its fruit outlasts its tannin, it will certainly be an outstanding wine. Bright ruby-red. Pungent aromas of black cherry, black raspberry, cocoa powder, licorice and minerals. Juicy, lively and fruit-driven; a Nuits of noteworthy sweetness and finesse. Finishes with broad tannins and excellent length. Some rain just before these vines were harvested "brought down the sugars to 13.5%," according to Bize-Leroy.
