Our third flight kicks off with the 1999 Solaia. Still a powerhouse, the 1999 (magnum) packs a serious punch. Dark macerated cherry, espresso, chocolate, licorice and blackberry jam infuse the 1999 with so much character. The 1999 is very much a product of its era, a time when heavy extraction and a search for concentration ruled the day. Even so, it has aged impeccably.

Aged 14 months in new French oak. Classic and restrained, with a subtly perfumed nose – violet, chocolate, black cherry. Very firmly tannic, in a way that is not quite in line with the rest of the structure, leaving a toughness on the finish. (RH)
Power and structure are the hallmarks of the 1999 Solaia, a wine that will drink well for another 15-20 years, if not longer. The firm, structured style will thrill classicists. In a flight of standout vintages, the 1999 truly excels. For years, the 1999 was very tight. It finally seems to be blossoming.
Cabernet Sauvignon, with 20% Sangiovese and 5% Cabernet Franc . Dark blackish crimson. Extremely lush on the nose. If this is Sangiovese, it's exceptional! Then very sweet start and real lift. A sort of Lafite style. Super flattering. Real delicacy plus great ripeness. Very reverberant. Lovely fresh finish. But very little tannin at this stage. Tea leaf, just a hint of green leafiness but not unpleasant. Acidity is a factor – high altitude? (JR)
