Tasted blind at the annual “Burgfest” tasting in Brouilland. The 2013 Chablis Grand Cru la Moutonne has a rather oaky bouquet with lemon curd, lime and freshly sliced pear mixed with flint, tight at first but opening nicely in the glass. The palate is well balanced with freshly squeezed grapefruit and sour lemon on the entry, moderate weight, a little terse but I appreciate the edginess and tension on the finish. It needs a little more time to knit together, just 2-3 years should be suffice. Tasted May 2016.

Bright yellow. Deeply pitched aromas of ripe and dried peach, flinty minerality, truffle and earth; less expressive than the 2014 but with noteworthy similarities. Silky-smooth on entry; begins fresh, then expands and intensifies without losing its grip. Boasts very good tension to its flavors of yellow fruits and minerals and finishes with excellent length. This has a bit more acidity than the Clos but slightly less than the Blanchots; estate manager Mangenot noted that the top section of this monopole vineyard squeezed between Vaudésir and Preuses gives this wine its acidity.
Real sinewy intensity. Quality shines through. Great depth and then diamond-cutting sharpness. Great stuff. (JR)
(13.8% natural alcohol): Bright medium yellow. Lovely lift to the aromas of yellow fruits, lemon and caramel, plus a more exotic suggestion of caramel. Large-scaled, dense and tactile, but with sound balancing acidity giving shape to the deep flavors of mirabelle and spices. Quite rich and round on the very long finish, staining the palate with dusty stone. Excellent potential here but this still needs more elevage.

Although the Bichot family settled in the region in 1350, Albert Bichot was founded in 1831 by Bernard Bichot. Today the producer is one of Burgundy’s most respected, making wines from both its own vineyards and with purchased fruit.
