The 2017 Pommard Clos des Arvelets 1er Cru has a slightly tertiary bouquet. There would seem to be some whole bunches here, but in fact there is none. The palate is medium-bodied, offering quite a savory, ferrous entry, a fine bead of acidity and a tang of cracked black pepper toward the finish. This has good potential.

Haisma has made this since 2014. He says Pommard is his ‘Côte de Beaune version of Nuits-St-Georges’. South-facing on thin/mean soils. Old vines. Fully destemmed. Tank sample. Lightish cherry red. Tangy sour-cherry nose, surprisingly fragrant. Firm and a little smoky on the palate. Taut but not hard and there’s tension on the finish between the acidity and the tannins. Needs time. (JH)
