Deep, purplish ruby. Pure and savoury blueberry fruit nose and sappy red and dark fruit on the palate. Firm tannins adding real interest. Certainly a wine for the dinner table. (WS)

I had tasted this as an unfinished wine last year but hadn't assigned an official score until now. The 2017 Dolcetto d'Alba Coste & Fossati pours from the bottle with an inky dark appearance, but the bouquet is rather tame and contained considering the full-throttle personality of Dolcetto. (This should be especially true in a hot vintage such as 2017.) Dark cherry and blackberry notes unfold to give the wine a lasting sensation of thickness and darkness.
The 2017 Dolcetto d'Alba Coste & Fossati is a wine of extraordinary and arresting beauty. Intense and yet also remarkably delineated, the Coste & Fossati is a terrific example of the heights Dolcetto can reach in skilled hands. Readers will find a gorgeous, beautifully layered wine endowed with tremendous energy and focus. Dark plum, graphite, smoke, menthol and licorice all build in this super-expressive and nuanced wine from Vajra. I loved it.
