Punteggio 16.5/20 · Da bere 2023-2035, Jancis Robinson MW, Sep 2021

Full bottle a very naughty 1,790 g. Mid to dark garnet. Some oak influence still and both acid and tannin in evidence. Still quite youthful. I'd wait awhile before broaching this. Dried fruit sensation. Quite concentrated with a little drying sensation on the end, but this may just be down to its youth. No shortage of ambition! It's not pastiche style as in the early 20th century, but it's not precisely 21st-century either. 24 hours in a decanter later and it had calmed down a little but is still very embryonic, if ambitious, but to my mind was outshone by the freshness of the 2018 Clos 1873 tasted at the same time. Poised, textured and complex, this had low yields in 2018, right down to 20hl/h but manages to retain a supple, juicy feel to the tannins. Raspberry leaf and peony flower aromatics, followed by raspberry and blackberry fruit, and a blast of spice on the finish. Still young, will improve over the next few years in bottle. Always impressive winemaking from Veronique and Jean-François Julien, Cluade Gros consultant.

Beautiful cassis and mulberry fruits as well as notes of iron, dried herbs, and loamy soil emerge from the 2018 Château La Fleur Morange, which comes from a unique site on the lower plains of Saint-Emilion. Medium to full-bodied and nicely concentrated, with firm tannins, it's an impressive wine yet needs a good 3-5 years of bottle age, at which point its tannins should be nicely integrated and it will hold for over a decade.
