Attractive mid crimson. Focused cherry-and-mineral nose, but rather diffuse and animal on the palate. A promising start let down by too many jostling farmyardy flavours. (AH)

Dark garnet in color, the 2010 Brunello di Montalcino is a deep and savory wine with evolved tones of dried cherry, blackberry preserves, spice, worn leather and cured meat. Pretty accents of grilled herb and licorice add to the wine's sense of life and buoyancy. Smoked bacon and spice wrap over the palate. Villa Poggio Salvi's wines have been less consistent in recent years.
Youthful mid ruby. Quite pure raspberry and cherry fruit nose with a hint of leather. Looks like this has a touch of brett, but adds rather than distracts from the fruit. Lovely tangy finish with chewy tannins. It just remains to be seen how it will develop in the bottle. (WS)
