The 2014 Barbera d'Alba Prephylloxera is a bit more powerful than the straight Barbera, but, it, too, possesses only limited depth and finesse. I would prefer to drink this virile, sinewy Barbera over the next few years. Even with its formidable intensity, the 2014 does not appear to be a wine that will develop much more complexity with further time in bottle.

The Elvio Cogno 2014 Barbera d'Alba Prefilossera is a darkly extracted and thick wine that shows some serious muscle. This is a big-boned Barbera that exudes power and concentration with Morello cherry, tobacco and barbecue smoke. The mouthfeel is thick, but slightly shorter in this vintage.
