The 2017 Meursault-Blagny has a light, well-defined but slightly anonymous bouquet. The palate is sour and feels underripe, displaying green asparagus and nettle notes. Rather attenuated on the finish. Odd. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Savigny-lès-Beaune.

The 2017 Meursault Blagny 1er Cru has turned out well, unfurling to reveal aromas of crisp yellow apple, citrus oil and fresh peach mingled with hints of white flowers and clear honey. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, textural and enveloping, with a charming core of fruit that cloaks its succulent acids. This has fleshed out since I tasted it in barrel, yet it remains an unusually precocious, open-knit rendition of this cuvée (which debuted in 1974).
Smoky grapefruit aroma. This seems a little more rounded and less intense than the Tillets, still complex and intense but a little less smokily distinctive. But this might be the wine for you if you don't like too much struck match and want the same intensity. (JH)
