The 2016 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is showing very well, wafting from the glass with aromas of red plums, candied peel, exotic spices, dark chocolate and creamy new oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a deep core, considerable extract and vibrant acids, framed by notably fine-grained tannins that are very promising for its future evolution. Clerget produced three barrels, one of which was new.

(half of the fruit was lost to frost; just three barrels made, two of them new): Bright, dark red with ruby tones. Lovely perfume of black cherry, licorice, wild herbs and mint. Rich, sappy, rather supple Clos Vougeot with dark cherry and chocolate flavors accented by herb and menthol notes. A sweet, pliant, fruit-driven Clos Vougeot with lovely generosity of texture but also a solid spine of building, broad, chewy tannins. Made from well-aerated millerandé grapes, according to Thibaud Clerget, who sold off this fruit from the climat Grand Maupertuis to Henri Boillot through the 2015 vintage.
