Boisterous, textured and full of sweet fruit, the Fattoria le Pupille 2015 Poggio Valente is fleshy and soft throughout. This was a warm and sunny vintage that produced picture-perfect fruit by harvest time. This wine is fleshy and bold, but I prefer the 2013 in comparison, thanks to the linear elegance of that vintage. This 2015, however, ends with fun hints of sweet fruit and green spice that contrast each other nicely.

Debut vintage of this 100% Syrah. According to winery founder Elisabetta Geppetti, the inspiration for this wine came from France. 3,600 bottles in 2015 and there are always fewer than 5,000. Made from two different vineyards, one very close to the new winery and a bigger one on the original vineyard site near the Piemme vineyard. Both were planted in 2000. The winery vineyard fruit is fermented in 300-litre French oak, and the other in Fontodi terracotta pots (orce) ‘which give the pure essence of the grape’. Always 10% whole bunch. Longest skin contact: until the end of May – eight months. They top up the orce with tonneaux wine. Deep crimson. Glamorous and polished! Very recognisably varietal. (JR)
The 2015 Poggio Valente is 100% Sangiovese aged in 500 and 600-liter barrels. Powerful and ample on the palate, the 2015 delivers serious flavor intensity as well as character. Super-ripe dark cherry, plum, leather, smoke and spice build in a wine endowed with notable richness. It will be interesting to see where this wine goes in the future, especially in years that provide the natural materials to make wines with a bit better balance and harmony. All that said, the 2015 is terrific.
100% Sangiovese from a single vineyard. Mid ruby with orange tinges. Firm cherry fruit nose with hints of black pepper. Gorgeous cherry palate but with quite formidable tannins. Hints of tobacco leaf indicating there is already some development. (WS)
