FINE+RARE, Nov 2017

Quite different to the Narbantons. Much darker. Dense, brooding, quite unrevealing nose at first, takes some coaxing. Smoke, dark cherry, earth. Iron ore. Compact, tightly knit tannic backbone, which will blossom in time. There is real power in the background here, which will require some patience. Nicely rounded and well-proportioned, real freshness. Blueberry and dark cherry on the finish, a foretaste of what’s to come. Excellent.

(production was just eight hectoliters per hectare): Bright medium red. Fragrant aromas of redcurrant, flowers, coffee and spices. Juicy, spicy and nicely concentrated, with good firming acidity as this wine was made almost entirely from the second set of buds. A very good showing for such a freakishly low crop level. (Technical director Frédéric Barnier noted that most of Jadot's 2016s from frosted vineyards were roughly two-thirds from the first buds and one-third from the contra-bourgeons .) As a village, Savigny-lès-Beaune was killed by frost in '16, noted Barnier, with overall production down about 80% from average. There's no Les Vergelesses and just a single barrel of Narbantons.

The 2016 Savigny-les-Beaune 1er Cru La Dominode has a superb bouquet with lively red cherry and crushed strawberry fruit, a touch of orange blossom and blood orange developing in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red berry fruit, a little foursquare and conservative compared to the aromatics, with a short, quite structured, masculine finish. Give this a couple of years once bottled.
