Punteggio 98/100 · Da bere 2017-2050, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, Jan 2017

The 2001 Vin Santo di Montepulciano (375 milliliters) is a divine and superbly delicious sweet blend of Trebbiano, Malvasia and Grechetto. The results are super concentrated and simmered down to a virtual reduction sauce of deliciousness. There are so many aromas to name, but some of the most evident highlights include candied orange peel, almond marzipan, caramel, toasted coffee bean, vanilla stick, mocha, dark honey and fragrant yellow rose. The mouthfeel is creamy, rich and deeply layered. I'm suggesting a slightly shorter drinking window here compared to the Occhio di Pernice. But, the truth is: I have no idea. I'm pretty sure these wines will outlive anyone of legal drinking age.

Toffee, caramel, dried flowers, vanillin and sweet spices are some of the many notes that give the 2001 Vin Santo di Montepulciano its unique flavor profile. As always, the Vin Santo is distinguished by its voluptuous, silky texture. Plush, round and inviting, the 2001 is virtually impossible to resist. In 2001 I prefer it slightly over the more famous Occhio di Pernice, as the white grapes provide a touch of floral lift and brightness. Only a slight element of dryness on the finish detracts from the wine's overall balance. (375ml)

Avignonesi's 2001 Via Santo di Montepulciano, which is made exclusively from white grapes, offers up a compelling mélange of toffee, caramel, butter, dried flowers and dried fruits, all in the unctuous, super-rich style that is the Avignonesi signature. As always, the estate's Vin Santo is singular, but in this vintage it is also a bit more oxidative than normal, which may be related to the slightly angular contours that come through.
