The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino opens perfumed with a mentholated freshness, blending rosemary and pine with crushed plums and cedary spice. This is remarkably fresh and lifted with a silken wave of ripe red and hints of blue fruit coasting along a wave of vibrant acidity. This finishes with a lovely inner tension, leaving a resonance of licorice and a coating of fine tannins that frame the experience beautifully. This is a gorgeous interpretation of the vintage and maturing at a glacial pace. Well done.

Here is a straight shooting and enjoyable expression of Sangiovese. Like many of its peers from this undertone vintage, the 2012 Brunello di Montalcino opens to a dark ruby color and shows pretty aromatic intensity. There are notes of dried cherry, wild berry, spice and tobacco. But the wine is rather short in persistence and although it offers good structure, there is a point of sour cherry on the close. Some 26,000 bottles are produced.
Montalcino Sud. Mid crimson. Exceptionally evolved nose. Almost velvety texture. Dusty finish marks it out as a Brunello. Masses of energy. Racy and vegy. Most attractive mix of ingredients. Neat finish. (JR)
Tasted blind. Concentrated ruby with orange tinges. Exciting nose of cherry and wet earth. A hint of horse saddle or leather and a touch medicinal. ‘Natural’? Sweet, bright and juicy red fruit with a wonderful, almost spicy tannic core. (WS)
