Punteggio 94/100 · Da bere 2028-2055, Neal Martin, Apr 2026

The 2016 Grand Puy-Lacoste has a bright, elegant and poised bouquet with quite intense, mineral-rich black fruit, improving with every swirl in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, quite strict and linear, not a deep Pauillac '16 yet tensile and very persistent on the finish. Classically styled Pauillac. Tasted blind at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting.

Pure, precise and refined aromas of blue fruit, cherries, currants, fresh herbs, green olives and a hint of graphite. On the palate it is refined and medium-bodied. The tannins are firm but quite woven and dusty, with a juicy core of fruit and a long, fresh finish. Understated and nuanced. It goes on for a minute. 79% cabernet sauvignon and 21% merlot. Classic but not opulent. A joy to drink now, but will age for decades. Drink or hold.

Brambled fruit, cherry pit, damson, sandalwood, black pepper, baking spices, juicy finish. Moving into its drinking window, a classically succulent and drinkable GPL. 75% new oak.

79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot. 45 hl/ha. Deep purple hue. Discreet aromatically but exudes elegance and class. Attractive fruit and firm but refined tannins so power and fruit combined. Precise and harmonious. For the long haul. (JL)
