Punteggio 94/100 · Da bere 2022-2027, Eric Guido, Vinous, Jan 2023

The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino is dark and viral in the glass, pulling me close with a display of balsamic-tinged black cherries, sweet foreign spice, lead pencil and plums. It’s soft and round in feel, nicely resolved after ten years of maturation, with an air of tobacco and savory herbs over a core of citrus-tinged red berries. The 2012 communicates wonderful refinement and poise, without being tannic, and leaves nuances of licorice and pomegranate to linger on and on. While I don’t find the structure here for another ten years of positive evolution, that 2012 is in a wonderful place today and in no fear of decline.

Le Potazzine Gorelli makes very distinctive expressions of Brunello that reflect a sort of secret truth about the Sangiovese grape. The effect is not completely polished, nor is it boring or predictable. The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino reaches for a degree of extreme authenticity and originality that is not commonly found in the appellation. This is low-profile wine with a big personality that proves to be very generous to those who make the time to know it. The bouquet reveals will berry, red rose, spice, earth and wild mushrooms. There is a touch of rusticity as well. In the mouth, this Brunello shows mild tannins and smooth integration. Like a friend you can count on, this is a best-buddy Brunello.

Montalcino Sud. Light ruby. Already rather mature and interesting on the nose. Then a little candified on the palate. Falls away a bit on the end. Shame. (JR)
