Cask sample. Leathery nose, bitter black cherry fruit, gentle floral fragrance. This is almost more like Tuscany than Burgundy – though with lighter body. The bitterness is integrated and appetising, but there is perhaps a lack of Pinot's red fruit ripeness. (RH)

The 2015 Pommard 1er Cru Les Chaponnières is also completely de-stemmed like Nicolas's other Pommards, however, I find much more refinement and terroir-expression on the nose compared to some of the other crus: blackberry, raspberry preserve and cold stone aromas developing in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with chalky tannin, solid backbone, vivacious and tensile with impressive precision on the finish. This is an excellent Pommard.
(100% destemmed, like the Santenots; still in barrel; this vineyard is located below Les Rugiens): Bright, dark red. Wild black fruits, leather, meat, smoke and earth on the nose. Smooth and tight-grained; less massive than the Volnay Santenots but with lovely lift to its flavors of black cherry and flowers. Shows good energy and definition for such a ripe wine--as well as an element of pliancy for Pommard, despite its building tannins. Rossignol says that a racking will expand the wine. I like this.
