The 2015 Nuits St Georges 1er Cru Aux Thorey is 100% whole cluster fruit with 45% new oak. There was just a slight reduction on the nose to contend with, though the palate is well structured with good backbone, fine acidity thanks to the limestone soil, with pretty blackberry and redcurrant fruit towards the precise finish. Excellent.

(100% vendange entier ; 50% new oak; from vines planted on hard limestone): Healthy dark red. Pungent minerality lifts the aromas of black cherry, licorice and spices. Very dense, tactile and rich, conveying an impression of chocolatey ripeness that I did not find in the Côte de Beaune wines at this address. A bit rustic in a Nuits-Saint-Georges way but boasts excellent energy and freshness. Noticeably tannic after the Côte de Beaune examples and not quite as long as the best wines from Pommard and Volnay.

Volnay’s Domaine de Montille is one of the most historic in the Côte d’Or. Founded in 1730, the property remains family-owned and run, with Etienne de Montille – the ninth generation – at the helm today.
