Punteggio 96/100 · Da bere 2021-2030, Eric Guido, Vinous, Mar 2021

Showing so youthful and perfumed, the 2001 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva starts out dark and inward yet gains in volume and depth the longer it sits in the glass. Dried black cherries, crushed stone, dusty rose and minty herbs create its dazzling bouquet. It is pure silk, with an amazing density to its dark red fruits, as rich balsamic spice and licorice drench the palate. This is elegant yet poised, with just a hint of sweet tannin, along with a buzz of residual acids and earthy mineral tones that mix with its inner sweetness to create a tense and contrasting feel on the slightly chewy finish. Collectors with the 2001 Riserva in their cellars will be very happy to know that it still has five to ten more years of positive evolution in store for them. Purchased from the Il Poggione cellar and held in professional storage.

Il Poggione's 2001 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is likely to go down as one of the estate's modern day classics. Like the 1999, it too is made in a full-bodied style, but it offers greater elegance and finesse than its older sibling. There is superb purity to this wine, not to mention an eternal finish framed by silky, ripe tannins. A minimum of a few years of cellaring is called for to allow the French oak to integrate. The vintage saw a rainy winter followed by a freakish April frost which reduced yields in several vineyards.

Their 2001 Brunello was outstanding and the 2001 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is even better. It is made in a rich, attention-grabbing style. Constantly changing in the glass, it offers an exciting array of dark cherries, violets, tar, tobacco, new leather, earthiness and smoke. This powerful Brunello possesses awesome length and superb harmony.
