Punteggio 90/100 · Da bere 2019-2025, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Mar 2017

Good medium red. Complex nose combines red fruits, leather, game and sexy earth notes: classic Gevrey-Chambertin. Supple red fruit and spice flavors are framed by underlying minerality. Offers excellent balance and restrained sweetness. This village wine has turned out very well.

(these vines average 40 years old; vinified with one-third whole clusters and aged in one-third new oak): Healthy medium-dark red. Very dark aromas of black raspberry, blackberry, licorice and sweet oak. Penetrating black fruit and strong oak flavors show brisk acidity but also good buffering thickness of texture. Just a touch tart in the early going as the wine's acidity has not yet come into harmony with its fruit. Production here was about 43 hectoliters per hectare, according to Nicolas Groffier.

The 2014 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Seuvrées sees 25% new oak and includes the same percentage of whole bunch fruit. It felt a little smudged on the nose, perhaps just a little high-toned for me. The palate is more controlled, nicely balanced with crisp blackberry and raspberry fruit. The whole bunch fruit works well here, lending freshness and tension towards the edgy finish. It actually improves the more that you remain in its company and will probably land towards the top of my banded score once in bottle.
