Punteggio 17/20 · Da bere 2024-2036, Jancis Robinson MW, Oct 2024

65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 15% Sangiovese. Aged for 18 months in barrique. Magnum. Mid crimson. Intense bordelais nose. Rather exotic and spicy. No concessions to a rainy vintage! Except the tannins are little insistent on the end. A defiantly non-2014 wine! Bold and almost brash. (JR)

Punteggio 16.5/20 · Da bere 2018-2028, Richard Hemming MW, jancisrobinson.com, Jul 2018

Less complex and pure than their 2015 with a crude, baked quality to the fruit. Firm, furry tannin with bitterness on the finish. No lack of concentration but it lacks elegance. (RH)

Here is another one of those vintage-defying wines to emerge from a very challenging growing season with lots of rain and below average temperatures. The 2014 Bolgheri Superiore Grattamacco benefits from extreme fruit selection and careful management in the winery. This is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese from one of the most celebrated estates on the Tuscan Coast. The bouquet is full and generous. It peels back with thick intensity revealing luscious tones of blackberry fruit with spice, leather and tobacco. There is structural firmness here but the tannins are well integrated within the fleshiness of the wine.

Grattamacco’s story begins when Piermario Meletti Cavallari purchased an abandoned vineyard in 1977 and grafted over many of the vines. He produced one of the earliest Super Tuscans in 1982 – a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese and a wine which continues to earn acclaim today.
