This is one of the first wines put into the Gran Selezione basket. Dark ruby. Intense nose – much more 'international'-seeming than, say, the Riserva. But it does at least finish convincingly Sangiovese-like with a hint of the farmyard after all that concentration. Quite racy despite the weight. Really appetising. Good balance and well constructed. Just not awfully pure Tuscan. Not as fresh as the Riserva 2010. I think it's a bit sad that such internationally styled wines seem to be favoured for the Gran Selezione. (JR)

Black cherries, plums, French oak, spices and licorice all take shape in the 2010 Chianti Classico Castello di Brolio. The 2010 is indelibly shaped by French oak, both texturally and in its overall flavor profile. Personally, I see little evidence the wine needs this much oak. The 2010 is no doubt attractive, but it could have been so much than that.

Barone Ricasoli’s flagship wine, the 2010 Chianti Classico Castello di Brolio flaunts its pedigree and beauty right from the start. The bouquet is balanced and intense with a charming mixture of bright berry fruit and oak-driven tones of spice and tobacco. The fabric of the wine is firm, fresh and perfectly streamlined. Menthol highlights and grilled herbs are fitting endnotes. The best part is that this wine never strays far from tradition. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025. Dark ruby with orange-tinged rim. Rather oaky and international on the nose, but the palate is more fluid and fruit driven. Clearly aiming at an international audience. Little to discover here, and more winemaking than terroir. (WS)
