The 2012 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano shows sweet minerals, smoky crushed stone, dusty red currants and a hint of green stems. This is soft (“succulent” comes to mind), blending ripe red fruits with sweet herbs and minerals, all brightened by lively acidity. While still lightly structured, the 2012 tapers off juicy, giving and persistent, resonating on hard red candies and hints of licorice. It’s a very pretty Vino Nobile in its early maturity.

Open-knit and expressive, the 2012 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is a beautiful wine to drink now and over the next 7-10 years. The flavors are dark, bold and seductive, with plenty of vintage 2012 intensity, yet all the elements come together effortlessly in the glass. The 2012 is a terrific example of Vino Nobile in this warm year.
Dark, impenetrable ruby. Upfront oak nose leaving little to the imagination. Marzipan cherry-fruit palate with fresh acidity, but the oak makes the finish a little dry. Less would have been more, but it certainly has length. (WS)
