Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2024-2042, Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux, Jun 2024

Spiced character from first sip leans towards cumin and turmeric, creamy fruits and touches of smoked caramel, this is a gourmet take on the vintage, showing how this corner of the Médoc performed better than many other parts of the region in 2014. Good quality, drops slightly on the finish. 45hl/h, 85% new oak for ageing.

The 2014 Sociando Mallet has a complex nose, a mixture of red and black fruit, cedar and pencil lead, quite focused, and here, the oak is very nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with sapid black fruit, a bit chewy at first but with good depth. It maintains fine structure on the finish, but it needs a little more complexity and precision to merit a more generous score. Tasted blind at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting.

Tasted blind. Deep garnet. Elegant and restrained aroma of dark fruits and a hint of evolution in cigar-box notes. Firm, chewy, compact and with masses of potential. The tannins are perfectly polished and the whole is balanced and fresh, if still youthful. GV (JH)

A touch austere, good depth and Left Bank character, a ton of pencil lead and cassis fruit, not exactly generous even at 10 years old, feels like this has a lot of ageing potential, mint leaf, eucalyptus, sage, black pepper lift, old school balance. 100% new oak.
