Punteggio 88/100 · Da bere 2024-2032, Neal Martin, Mar 2024

The 2014 Lynch-Moussas has an uncomplicated nose, red fruit, briar and tobacco. This is an Old School claret, but it has retained freshness. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, savory red fruit, orange rind, cooked meats and a soft landing on the finish. Fine, although this seems more evolved than I would have envisaged a few years ago. Tasted non-blind at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting.

Sweet raspberry fruit, with tobacco, pencil lead and orange rind freshness. Smoky oak dominant, even a touch of tar, that takes away from the well expressed autumnal fruits. Enjoyable, less depth than in more recent vintages of this improving estate, owned by the Casteja family.

79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot. Tasted blind. Mid crimson. Slightly obvious oak on the nose that doesn’t seem top-drawer. A little astringent. Perfectly fine but not one of the most ambitious. Stringy finish. Ticks the boxes. (JR)

Punteggio 91/100 · Da bere 2020-2035, Neal Martin, Mar 2018

The 2014 Lynch-Moussas has open-knit red fruit on the nose: red cherries, raspberry and wild strawberry all tinged with vanilla. The palate is medium-bodied with a little sharpness on the entry, very traditional in style with an austere pencil-lead finish that at least contains decent freshness. This is a fine Lynch-Moussas that needs age. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.
