The 2014 Grand-Puy Ducasse, en magnum, has decent fruit concentration on the nose—more than I noticed in previous bottles—with a mixture of blackberry, strawberry and cedar. The palate is smooth in texture and it has fine depth, though overall this does not possess the complexity and nuance of more recent vintages under winemaker Anne La Nour. Tasted at the Grand-Puy Ducasse event in London.

The 2014 Grand Puy Ducasse offers straightforward scents of cedar-tinged red fruit, cooked meats/dried blood and perhaps just a touch of Brettanomyces. The palate is medium-bodied with drying tannins and meaty with a slightly Rhône-like finish. It's a bit gritty and, to be frank, not the most appetizing. Tasted non-blind at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting.
Dark with bricky rim. Meaty, developed aroma. Sweet with dried fruit. Smooth tannins but not much energy left, tannins slightly dry on the finish. (JH)
The 2014 Grand Puy Ducasse has a broody bouquet of blackberry and boysenberry fruit, just a hint of seawater. The palate is medium-bodied with stringy tannin, moderate acidity and veins of mocha towards the finish. The oak just juts out a little here and detracts from its delineation but it may pull together with continued bottle age. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

The 40 hectares of this Pauillac Fifth Growth are spread across three sites, pieced together in the 18th century by Pierre Ducasse. Today owned by France’s Crédit Agricole bank, they have some very fine vineyard land, with their northernmost plot neighbouring Mouton and Lafite.
