Light brick in colour. Rather more reticent on the nose than I expected. Delicate, refined and dry in texture. Not a whole lot of immediate flavour but it makes a harmonious whole, with a fresh, dry finish and there’s a red-fruit scent lingering on the mid palate. Good but strictly for those already converted to Barolo. (JH)

The 2009 Barolo Pira is another pretty wine. Next to the 2009 Pajè, its rough equivalent in the range of Barbarescos, the Pira is a bit fresher and brighter, with redder tonalities in its fruit and lively, piercing acidity that is going to need a few years to integrate. Pine, crushed flowers, mint, anise and crushed rocks are all layered into the finish. There is so much to like here.
