Punteggio 17/20 · Da bere 2016-2026, Julia Harding MW, jancisrobinson.com, Jul 2015

Property bought by Allegrini in 2006. Winemaker Nicola Biasi. In the eastern part of Montalcino. The grapes for this wine come from vineyards covering approximately nine hectares, planted between 1990 and 2000.  They are situated at 450 metres above sea level, facing south-southwest on chalky, clay soils. They are spur-cordon trained with a density of 4,000-7,000 plants per hectare. Yields are 34 hectolitres per hectare. The grapes were hand picked into 17-kilo crates. After gentle pressing, fermentation took place in temperature-controlled concrete tanks with temperatures reaching a maximum of 28-30 °C, with a long maceration on the skins lasting 20-22 days. The wine was aged in new, medium-toasted, French oak tonneaux (500 litres) for a period of 24 months, followed by extended ageing in  bottle. TA 5.7 g/l, pH 3.5. Mid garnet with soft rim showing just a touch of brick. Fabulous perfume – red fruited and floral. Mouthwatering freshness underpinned by sweet red fruits and all shaped by fine and already supple tannins. Juicy sweetness but serious too. Long finish. Already so easy to drink. (JH)

Medium red colour with bricking at the rim. Smoky, savoury, mineral nose, showing Sangiovese's more rustic side. Attractive chew on the palate gives way to alcohol heat and a rather cloying, sweet finish. (AH)

Juicy dark cherries, rose petals, savory herbs, mint and wild flowers are all woven together nicely in the 2010 Brunello di Montalcino. Succulent and forward, the 2010 drinks well today, but it also has the depth to develop nicely for at least a few more years. Silky tannins support the round, supple finish. The fruit-driven, middle of the road style is sure to find many admirers.

Poggio San Polo's 2010 Brunello di Montalcino is a beautiful wine with a deep sense of aromatic purity and complexity. The bouquet delivers characteristic tones of small berry, forest floor, pressed violets, sweet spice, licorice and cola. Those aromas are both pure and intense, and build in momentum as the wine takes on more air in the glass. This is a fantastic effort with a mouthfeel that is as delicate and light as its it is meaningful and long-lasting. The overall effect is one of elegance and finesse. This is a highly recommendable achievement from a classic vintage. Open this bottle after 2017.
