The single-vineyard Magill Estate Shiraz is intrinsically linked to Penfolds beginnings. Sourced from the original Magill Vineyard on the edge of Adelaide’s eastern suburbs (just eight kilometres from the city’s CBD), fruit is crushed, fermented and matured on-site at the original Penfolds Magill winery, established in 1844. First produced in 1983. Hand-picked, vinified in large open fermenters and then basket pressed. TA 7.5 g/l, pH 3.46. 14 months in 65% new French oak and 35% new American oak hogsheads. Even the replanted material on the estate is now 60 years old. Dark crimson. Really spicy aroma. Mulberry sweetness and zest at the same time, some violets. Fresh acidity, mouthwatering. Bright, vibrant, sweet, dark fruited and remarkably soft in texture. Some cedary character from the oak and the French oak shines. You wouldn't know it was 100% new oak though there's cedar on the finish and finesse to the end. (JH)

The 2011 Magill Estate Shiraz is aged in 100% new oak (hogsheads) of which 65% is French and 35% American. This very deep garnet-purple colored Shiraz is closed on the nose, though it does show lovely red and black fruits, quite a lot of exotic spices and a somewhat meaty, cedar note lingering in the background, though not overtly. Medium-bodied and elegant, it has quite a lot of individual character shaped by medium to firm, fine tannins, a crisp acid spine and a long finish. Drink it 2015 – 2025+. Imported by Treasury Wine Estates, Napa, CA
