Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2022-2042, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Apr 2023

The 2009 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggio is another gorgeous wine for drinking now. Sweet red cherry fruit, kirsch, mint, leather and sweet spice show the natural radiance of the warm growing season. That richness leaves the 2009 with a distinctly ripe, exotic profile that is a bit out of context for Il Poggio. Even so, the 2009 boasts considerable density, not to mention tons of personality.

Same blend as the straight Riserva but from the single vineyard. Beautiful Sangiovese tanginess and pepperiness on the nose. Elegant, and muscular at the same time. Tannic finish with tangy cherry. The tannins are still a little jagged and need more time in the bottle. (WS)

The 2009 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggio is surprisingly open for a wine that is usually much more structured in its youth. The warm resonance of the year comes through nicely in layered small red berries, tobacco, licorice and incense. Although the flavor profile is quite classic, this is an especially ripe, flashy vintage for the Poggio, with less of the sheer visceral thrill that is such a big part of what makes the best vintages special.

Subtle elegance is also the theme of the 2009 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggio. This wine sees some new oak and offers more density and aromatic richness as a result. Black fruit and spice are enhanced by tobacco and leather. Those characteristic herbal tones appear on the finish and ground this wine to a sense of territory. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2025. Castello di Monsanto makes wines that I buy and drink often. They offer great value and few producers reproduce the beautiful aromas and perfumes of Tuscany as well as Laura Bianchi and her family.
