Punteggio 90/100 · Da bere 2014-2028, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, May 2024

The Fattoria le Pupille 2011 Saffredi is ripe and thickly textured with heavy aromas and a very open-knit approach. The wine's texture is almost gritty or granular with baked fruit, road tar, baking chocolate and toasted spice. The effect is big and bold, and there's no mistaking this as anything but a hot-vintage release. The wine's drinking window is closing and its complexity is fading.

60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 5% Syrah. The growing season in 2011 featured exceptional heatwaves, periodically interspersed with cooler periods. At the end of July, very heavy rains replenished the water reserves of the soil. This probably explains why the vines, despite the extraordinary heat from mid August to mid September, with daily temperature exceeding 35 °C, did not experience any significant water stress. Luca D’Attoma was responsible for the final blend of the wine. Harvest between 1 September and 30 September. 30,000 bottles produced. Dark crimson. Very subtle and evolved on the nose – super-charming. On the palate, it is still a bit jagged and unintegrated. Quite a disconnect between nose and palate, but with food they can presumably be brought closer together. Needs time. (JR)

Impeccably lifted and gracious on the palate, the 2011 Saffredi lifts from the glass with expressive floral notes and beautifully articulated fruit. Overall, the 2011 is an elegant, restrained Saffredi that emphasizes finesse over power, although there is plenty of vintage 2011 sexiness. More importantly, the 2011 is a big step up from the 2010. Sage, rosemary and tobacco are some of the many notes that add complexity as the wine continues to open up in the glass. The 2011 is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 5% Syrah.

Here's yet another stunning wine from Fattoria le Pupille. The 2011 Saffredi (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot) opens to thick, dark extraction and large scale aromatic intensity. This was a warm vintage and you can feel the softness in the ripe cherry and blackberry flavors offered by the Merlot. The Cabernet component is also evident thanks to pressed rose and grilled Mediterranean herb. Saffredi is a wine built for long cellar aging, yet this vintage can also be readily consumed in the near term. Sep 2015, www.robertparker.com
