Punteggio 17/20 · Da bere 2016-2026, Walter Speller, jancisrobinson.com, Oct 2014

Hand-numbered magnum number 19 of 3050 produced. Date of harvest: 24 September 2009. Impenetrable dark ruby. Brooding ripe blackberry fruit on the nose with notes of oak and herbs. Ripe black fruit on the palate. Perhaps less complex than the other vintages and a little richer too, but the acidity literally grabs you on the finish. Firm tannic grip on the finish and not ready yet. (WS)

The 2009 Il Caberlot has developed beautifully since I last tasted it. Dark red cherries, dark raspberries, rose petals, mint and licorice all explode from the glass. Rich, vibrant and beautifully alive, the 2009 impresses for its superb balance and class. This is a stunning wine that brings together the intensely savory personality of the Cabernet Franc/Merlot hybrid allied to the voluptuousness of the warm vintage. Today, the 2009 comes across as fresher and more vibrant than the 2011s. Any way you look at it, the 2009 is a stunning Caberlot.

The 2009 Il Caberlot is very pretty in this vintage. This isn't a huge Caberlot, rather it is a wine built on a silky, finessed expression of fruit. Dark raspberry jam, flowers, spices, licorice and espresso come together nicely in this delineated, vibrant wine. It will be interesting to see how the Caberlot develops over the coming years. The 2009 spent 22 months in 100% new French oak barrels. (Magnum)

The 2009 spent 22 months in 100% new French oak barrels. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. These are two pretty wines from Il Carnasciale, a tiny estate located in the hills above Mercatale Valdarno. The 2009s aren’t as impressive as some recent vintages, but they are attractive and should drink well pretty much right out of the gate. Both wines are made from Caberlot, a cross between Cabernet Franc and Merlot that has yielded gorgeous wines here in the past. Importer: The Rare Wine Co., Sonoma, CA; tel. (707) 996-4484
