Punteggio 91/100 · Da bere 2009-2016, David Schildknecht, Wine Advocate, Dec 2009

Vinified and aged in a mixture of large cask and barriques, the Laroche 2007 Chablis Blanchots leads with high-toned lemon oil; pungent, peppermint-like herbal aromatics; and musky, narcissus like floral essences. Rich and creamy yet with a welcome sense of buoyancy and refreshment, it finishes with lemon zest, white pepper, pungent herbs, and crushed stone in a very straight, long-lined, penetrating finish, and should be worth following for 5-7 years. Winemaker Denis de la Bourdonnaye seems bullish on his 2007s and their aging potential, despite emphasizing what he felt was the need to extensively work what lees he retained, and to bottle correspondingly later to avoid too-lean an impression. Having said that, de la Bourdonnaye then goes on to observe that he thinks the use of screw-cap closures - to which this estate was among the first in France to commit - is especially well-suited to the personality of the vintage, and to -the preservation of precision and minerality during long aging.- The majority of the 2007 wines here came in at little more than 12% potential alcohol, he relates, and chaptalization was negligible. It was announced in late September that Languedoc negociant Jeanjean had acquired Laroche, although early indications pointed toward continuity in the Chablis estate, with Michel Laroche remaining as director. Pale color. Precise nose begins with high-pitched lavender and violet, with a hazelnut quality emerging with aeration. Ripe, spicy and elegant in the mouth, offering lovely pliant texture and impressive concentration without any feeling of weight. Became fuller and more generous with air, but this vibrant wine is just beginning its life in bottle.

Screwcap. Concentrated and quite nutty with real opulence underneath. Certainly the grand cru status is evident in this wine. Probably best hidden for a while? Not a bad buy. (JR)
