Punteggio 93+/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Mar 2013

Good full red. Very subdued nose hints at redcurrant, spicy herbs and underbrush. Highly concentrated but youthfully tight, with a lightly saline quality to the complex flavors of blueberry, wild herbs, sandalwood and mocha. Just this side of thick but its superb balance of sweetness and acidity keeps it vibrant in the mouth. The long, ripely tannic finish features an exhilarating salty minerality. I may be underrating this.

Rich yet vibrant. Dry, dry tannins though the wine is not drying, it is just highly structured even though the tannins are fine grained. Like a lean runner with strength at the core but no soft edges until the perfumed aftertaste. (JH)

(50% new oak): Deep red-ruby. Musky, wild berry aromas complicated by licorice and exotic spices. Broad, full and quite dry; much less expressive today in the mouth than the preceding samples. The fruit shades to red, a sign of the moderately ripe vintage. Finishes with savory, peppery nuances and substantial dusty tannins.
