Punteggio 89/100 · Da bere 2019-2029, Neal Martin, Jan 2020

The 2004 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has a slightly rustic bouquet of red currant and cranberry fruit plus touches of green olive and copper piping. There is less of the "green meanies" than I found on Christophe Roumier’s Bonnes-Mares. The palate is medium-bodied with a rustic entry and chewy tannins; some brown sugar toward the finish could indicate enthusiastic chaptalization. Fine.

Medium red. Dark berries complicated by smoked meat and tar on the nose. Sweet, silky and broad, with the expressive gibiers and underbrush elements I find in most of these 2004s. Initially showed less verve than the Amoureuses but with aeration this fat fellow reveals plenty of inner-palate energy. Offers compelling sweetness and flesh for a 2004. Finishes long, with fine tannins.

Good deep red. Complex nose combines blueberry, mocha, espresso, licorice and pepper. Fine-grained but tightly coiled, with noteworthy energy to its brooding, medicinal flavors of black fruits and dark chocolate. This offers excellent verve and firm tannins that avoid hardness. Here, too, there's a slight youthful bitterness.
