Punteggio 88/100 · Da bere 2013-2015, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Apr 2012

The 2009 Volnay wafts from the glass with sweet red cherries, crushed flowers, spices and licorice. This is a pretty, if somewhat fleeting, Volnay to drink over the next few years.

The 2009 Volnay wafts from the glass with sweet red cherries, crushed flowers, spices and licorice. This is a pretty, if somewhat fleeting, Volnay to drink over the next few years. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2015. I tasted the 2009s from D’Angerville twice recently, once at the winery in December 2011 and a second time in my office in New York. The Volnay, Volnay 1er and Volnay Champans were all less impressive than the first time I tasted those wines, just after botting. Time will tell if the wines are going through a closed phase today, or if I overrated them the first time around. Importer: Diageo Chateau & Estate Wines, Napa CA; tel. (707) 299-2600

The 2009 Volnay emerges from the glass with a pretty, sensual bouquet that resonates beautifully on the palate where the fruit shows gorgeous perfume. Silky tannins layer into the inviting, generous finish. This is a beautiful village level wine graced with notable character and personality.

Bright red. Aromas of kirsch, leather and licorice. A chocolatey-ripe but reasonably bright midweight with modest mid-palate complexity and a touch of spice. Just a tad warm on the back end.
