Medium red. Musky, reticent nose offers truffley underbrush and menthol. Plump, ripe and sweet but less perfumed and primary than the 2010 version. Solidly structured, though, finishing with granular, slightly drying tannins. The estate bought most of this land in 2005 and went directly to biodynamic farming, noted winemaker Benjamin Leroux, who added, "it will take time to tame the vigor of the vines."

The Volnay is a blend of Les Famines and Les Grands Champs. Leroux separates the old-vine fruit from both sites and adds 50-60% of whole clusters to that portion of the wine. The total amount of whole clusters in the final blend is about 15% in 2009.

Mid red. Very rich with a hint of coffee. Lively and transparent with delivery. Quite dense and dry on the finish after lots of ripe fruit. Relatively complex for the price. GV (JR)
