The 2012 Pommard Tavannes has slightly darker fruit than the Santenay Prarons Dessus with mint-tinged blackberry and raspberry scents that need to muster a little more vigor. The palate is medium-bodied and shows better delineation than the nose: black and red fruit, touches of white pepper and a crisp taut, satisfying finish. This is commendable for an appellation beleaguered by the growing season. Drink now-2019. Fernand and his son Laurent represent the 4th generation of the Pillot family to farm vines around Chassagne. Their holdings were extended in 1992 and again in 2001 following their absorption of vines from Laurent’s wife, hitherto under the Pothier-Rieusset label. Today, they farm 14.6 hectares scattered around some 22 appellations. Excellent oak character – toasty and umami-scented – plus rich fruit, charming earthiness and beautifully judged tannin – supports the palate, then leaves a light fur on the finish. Really lovely stuff – and GV . (RH)
