The 1974 La Tâche Grand Cru comes from a difficult period for the estate. It's damning with faint praise, but there is a tad more definition and freshness on the nose compared to the 197, with light scents of black cherry, leather, wild fennel and brown sugar. The palate is simple, with hints of jasmine tea infusing the rather musty fruit, and then it tapers abruptly at the finish. Bottles in a larger format may hold some interest, but this is of curiosity value only from bottle. Tasted at the La Tâche vertical at The Square.
Tasted at the La Tâche vertical at The Square. The first thing to say is that this bottle of La Tâche 1974 was better than the 1972! It shows a little more clarity on the nose with pleasant scents of light cherries, leather, fennel and brown sugar. The palate is simple, rather monochromatic with jasmine tea on the tapered finish. This is just holding on by its fingernails. Drink up.
