Lebègue strip label brings back memories of this UK importer that disappeared off the scene soon after I started writing about wine in 1975 but was famous for its tastings of DRC – under London Bridge station? The vintage was chosen because it was the year Jamie and Dawn of The Sampler were born. Apparently the bottle still had the price of £13 on the back. Pale rose-tawny. Decidedly mushroomy but heady, transports-of-delight nose. Obviously quite sweet (quite heavily chaptalised?). A hint of cheesiness blew off. But it was initially pretty tart on the palate with a sort of sword of iron throughout it. Very fresh on the palate with a long, truffley aftertaste that sweetened up in the glass. But firm! Of the old school with great power on the end. Much less 'pure' than the current DRC style but talk about peacock's tail… (JR)
