Punteggio 94/100 · Da bere 2016-2035, Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, Oct 2015

Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Corton Grand Cru Clos du Roi from Domaine de la Vougeraie has a more masculine, tertiary bouquet with mulch-like, damp leafy scents that combine nicely with the fruit. Compared to Tollot-Beaut's Corton-Bressandes 2012, this is very classic in style. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin. I like the edginess here, as well as the energy and the finesse displayed on the finish. This is an excellent Corton, confirming my previous laudatory note.

(from 70-year-old vines, according to winemaker Pierre Vincent; vinified with 70% whole clusters): Bright deep red. Urgent aromas of crushed cherry, raspberry, rose petal, cardamom and cinnamon, complicated by a smoky nuance. Dense, juicy and sweet on entry, then firmly built and elegant in the middle, with good saline mineral energy giving the wine clarity and grip. Clearly the longest and most perfumed of these 2012s to this point.

The 2012 Corton Le Clos du Roi is striking. Beautiful, lifted aromas meld into sweet red fruit in a deceptively medium-bodied Burgundy that is all about grace. Mint, wild flowers, sweet red cherries and pine inform the precise, crystalline finish. A weightless Burgundy endowed with elegance and superb purity, the 2012 should age gracefully for a number of years. Today, it is magnificent. The 80% whole clusters add dimensions of complexity and nuance that are a wonder to behold.

There are background touches of wood spice adding breadth to the floral, cool and reserved mix of various red berries, earth and subtle sauvage hints. The overtly powerful and big-bodied flavors possess fine mid-palate density as there is an abundance of dry extract that helps to buffer the very firm tannic spine on the well-balanced, austere and very serious finish. A classic Corton oozing with minerality. Tasted: Jan 15, 2014. Drink: 2027+
