Punteggio 90/100 · Da bere 2015-2025, Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, Nov 2014

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The nose on Javillier’s 2011 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is a little reticent at first, but dunk your nose deep into the glass and there are attractive lime leaf and orange rind aromas that emerge. There is a bit of SO2 dampening the aromatics so I grace this with an hour’s decanting. The palate is clean and fresh with touches of mango and lemon curd, then nectarine and persimmon coming through on the well-defined but tightly coiled finish. This has good substance but it needs 5 or 6 years in the cellar.

Bright yellow. Complex, pungent scents of orange zest, ginger, nutmeg, crushed stone, smoke and white pepper. Then surprisingly fat and sweet in the mouth, but with sound acidity and a strong stony component giving grip to the ripe peach fruit. Very tactile, youthfully phenolic wine with well-judged oakiness (Javillier used three one-year-old barrels). This began with 12.8% potential alcohol and was chaptalized to 13.5%.

Lively top note on the richness. Lots of green fruit and juice. A tense Corton-Charlemagne that is trying. Tense enough to improve. (JR)

Bright yellow. Slightly high-toned aromas of exotic lime peel and ginger, plus a whiff of banana. Fat, supple and ripe for this cuvee, with nothing austere about it. Plenty of flavor and sweetness, but not a particularly minerally style. Finishes with a whiplash of flavor. Initially quite easy to taste but seemed to shut down in the glass.
