Another huge, full-bodied wine, the 1992 Corton-Charlemagne blasts from the glass with voluminous layers of rich, intense fruit. Here, again, the presence of botrytis seems to amplify the flavors and give them greater breadth. The 1992 is stylistically similar to the 1994, but it is bigger, riper, and in my view, a bit less elegant. It will be interesting to see if the 1992 remains huge, or if it will find more elegance in bottle. At this stage, my impression is it will be the former. Still, given all of today's issues surrounding premature oxidation, it is a pure joy to taste a 20 year-old Corton-Charlemagne that is still in fine shape.

The Gageys make no bones about rating 1989, 1985, and 1986 as significantly richer, more complex vintages for white burgundy than 1992. Their 1992s are successful, but based on my impressions of the 1992s vis a vis the 1989s, 1986s, and 1985s, I would agree with their assessment. The white winemaking philosophy in low acid years such as 1992 is to only do a partial malolactic fermentation in order to preserve the natural acidity. This has proven to be a highly successful policy, resulting in some of the longest-lived white burgundies of the region. The 1992 Corton-Charlemagne is not as impressively endowed as I expected. Nevertheless, it is an excellent wine, with a big, ripe, spicy, vanillin-scented nose, medium body, and fine richness and ripeness. The finish does lack length. Importer: Kobrand, Inc., New York, NY.
