Still a healthy ruby color, the 2008 Phelan Segur seems to be drinking at point and has a masculine, firm, yet balanced style as well as ample currants, tobacco, and smoked earth aromas and flavors. It has plenty of texture, good balance, and I suspect a solid decade of prime drinking to go.

The 2008 Phélan Segur has a simple bouquet with blackberry, redcurrant, freshly tilled soils and woodland scents that seem to gently unfold in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin, a little dry in the mouth with a simple blackcurrant pastille and cedar finish. I wine easy to like but difficult to really love. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 10-Year On tasting.
Tasted blind. Quite evolved nose with luscious soft tannins. Very winning now though much less potential for future development than most of its peers. Sweet finish. (JR)
Loads of smoky, toasted oak. Firm, serious, chewy structure. Modern flavour but with an almost severe firmness. (RH)

With 70 hectares under vine, Ch. Phélan Ségur sits on the eastern side of Saint-Estèphe – neighbouring Montrose and Calon Ségur. Owned by Philippe van de Vyvere since 2017, its gravel soils produce typically firm wines.
