Ch. Phélan Ségur 

Bordeaux sta cambiando. La Rive Gauche, in particolare, è stata a lungo una regione di etichette – di tenute grandiose, enologi raffinati e delle bottiglie che producono – i vigneti a fare da sfondo ai loro imponenti castelli e alle nuove cantine all’avanguardia. Naturalmente, i vigneti sono sempre stati importanti, in quanto fonte delle loro uve, ma raramente sono stati al centro delle conversazioni con il commercio o i consumatori. Ora però, forse influenzata dall’ascesa fulminea della Borgogna – e da un approccio al vino ormai diffuso in tutto il mondo – la nozione di terroir sta prendendo il centro della scena. Dietro le quinte, i bordolesi hanno forse sempre guardato sotto i propri piedi, ma ora ne parlano apertamente anche loro. 
 Da nessuna parte questo è più vero che a Ch. Montrose – una proprietà che ha annunciato un cambiamento significativo con il rilascio della sua annata 2023. La tenuta ha sempre prodotto alcuni dei vini più raffinati di Bordeaux, ma negli ultimi 15 anni (sotto la proprietà dei fratelli Bouygues) la qualità di questo domaine di Saint-Estèphe ha raggiunto nuove vette. Da sempre noto per la sua austerità e capacità di invecchiamento, ora presenta una raffinatezza moderna che addolcisce il suo stile severo – senza sacrificare classicità e longevità. Ogni annata sembra rivelare un nuovo livello di precisione e finezza. Dal 2023, Montrose ha annunciato che il suo Grand Vin proverrà solo dalla Terrazza 4 (T4). Se questo non ti dice molto, non mi sorprende. 
 Le sei terrazze ghiaiose del Médoc e delle Graves furono identificate da Pierre Becheler in una serie di studi negli anni ’80 e ’90. Ogni terrazza risale a un periodo diverso e presenta suoli distinti, con la Terrazza 1 (T1) la più antica e la Terrazza 6 (T6) la più giovane – e considerate un fattore determinante nel terroir della Rive Gauche. T3 e T4 sono ampiamente ritenute le migliori per la viticoltura, e Becheler scoprì che, al momento della classificazione del 1855, oltre l’80% dei crus classés si trovava su questi due distinti strati geologici. 
 Nell’ultimo decennio, questi rilievi ghiaiosi sono diventati una parte fondamentale della narrazione bordolese, spiegando il terroir delle diverse tenute. Nonostante la diffusa consapevolezza che le terrazze siano parte integrante della qualità dei vini, non esiste ancora una mappa completa del terroir della Rive Gauche – che mostri quali vigneti si trovano su quali suoli (le migliori sono quelle create da Jane Anson e Kees van Leeuwen per il libro Inside Bordeaux di Anson). La maggior parte degli studi è stata condotta da singole tenute, come a Montrose – che ha incaricato lo stesso Becheler di indagare sulle specificità del loro sito. È notevole che, pur senza conoscere nulla dei sottosuoli della regione, Montrose si sia trovata così fortunatamente posizionata – anche se, naturalmente, è sopravvissuta grazie al suo sito prestigioso. Le prime viti della proprietà furono piantate – tutte sulla leggendaria T4 – nel 1815, da Étienne Théodore Dumoulin, che aveva acquistato la terra da Nicolas Alexandre de Ségur (di Calon Ségur). Il terreno era coperto di erica, i suoi fiori rosa che in autunno ricoprivano il dolce pendio, e i marinai che passavano lungo l’estuario della Gironda lo chiamavano la collina rosa – o “mont rose”, da cui la proprietà prese il nome. 
 Solo quarant’anni dopo la prima piantagione, la tenuta guadagnò il titolo di Second Growth nella Classificazione del 1855. Nel 1861, quando Dumoulin morì, la proprietà comprendeva 95 ettari – ma i suoi confini si sono spostati nel tempo. Fu poi acquistata da un industriale alsaziano, Mathieu Dolfus, che investì pesantemente nella tenuta. Fu un visionario – offrendo assistenza sanitaria gratuita, partecipazione agli utili e alloggi ai lavoratori. Utilizzò persino una turbina eolica per inondare i vigneti, ritardando così gli effetti della fillossera il più a lungo possibile. 
 Montrose fu gestita dalla famiglia Charmolüe tra il 1896 e il 2006, con Jean-Louis – che diresse la tenuta dal 1960 – fondamentale nel costruirne la reputazione moderna. Fu sotto la sua guida, negli anni ’70, che vennero piantate viti su terreni più bassi, vicini all’estuario, che si trovano su T5. Queste parcelle umide e sabbiose vengono oggi utilizzate per La Dame de Montrose, il secondo vino dello château. 
 Fu nel 2006 che i fratelli Olivier e Martin Bouygues (dell’omonima compagnia di telecomunicazioni) acquisirono la proprietà. Nel 2010 acquistarono altri 22 ettari da Phélan Ségur, terreni che storicamente erano stati parte di Montrose. Questi vigneti, circondati da aree boschive, si trovano sulla più sabbiosa T3, ma soprattutto riportarono la superficie totale del vigneto a 95 ettari – come ai tempi di Dumoulin – e tutti in un unico blocco (qualcosa di relativamente raro a Bordeaux). I fratelli Bouygues assunsero Vincent Decup come Direttore Tecnico della tenuta nel 2014. Decup si mise subito al lavoro per comprendere a fondo la proprietà e i suoi suoli. Quando arrivò, avevano una mappa che mostrava 16 diversi tipi di terreno nei vigneti – ma presto commissionò ulteriori studi, scoprendo altri 10 tipi di suolo. Questo diede loro, racconta Decup, “la possibilità di esplorare e separare” le parcelle, approfondendo il sito con una visione più borgognona che bordolese. Dal 2017, il team iniziò a delimitare le parcelle – vinificando le uve in 93 tini separati (più del doppio dei 40 usati solo tre anni prima), adattando la vinificazione a ciascuna. Analizzando il Cabernet Sauvignon su T3 e T4, spiega come abbiano raggiunto “un nuovo livello di precisione e comprensione del Cabernet su ogni terrazza”. 
 “Il Cabernet Sauvignon di Montrose ottiene naturalmente molta potenza,” mi dice Decup. “Dobbiamo essere attenti con l’estrazione.” Soprattutto per l’uva proveniente da T3, spiega, può facilmente diventare troppo austera. T4 ha sempre rappresentato la maggior parte dell’assemblaggio per il Grand Vin di Montrose – e nella mente di Decup non è solo il DNA storico della proprietà, ma ciò che dà identità al vino. Mi racconta di come ci sia qualcosa di magico nel modo in cui il Cabernet matura su queste parcelle, sviluppando contemporaneamente maturità tecnica (zuccherina), aromatica e fenolica. Produce un vino “potente, voluminoso, dimostrativo – un leone in gabbia”. 
 Nel 2022, lo stesso anno in cui Charlotte Bouygues è diventata Presidente e Pierre Graffeuille CEO, il team ha iniziato a concentrarsi maggiormente su T4, e dal 2023 il Grand Vin proviene esclusivamente da questa preziosa terrazza. Provenendo dalle tenute Delon, Graffeuille conosceva bene il potenziale di questi suoli, condivisi con Léoville Las Cases. L’annata 2022 è stata cruciale – ottenendo quattro potenziali punteggi da 100 punti, con quattro confermati in bottiglia – e la 2023 ha seguito le sue orme, con tre potenziali punteggi perfetti. Le terrazze ghiaiose si innalzano e si abbassano lungo la regione. T4 affiora a Saint-Estèphe, scorrendo sotto Meyney e Montrose, per poi scomparire fino al margine meridionale di Pauillac, riapparendo intorno a Latour, attraversando gran parte di Saint-Julien (inclusi i tre Léoville – Las Cases, Barton e Poyferré – e Ducru-Beaucaillou), emergendo nuovamente in tutta Margaux e poi ancora sotto Haut-Brion e La Mission Haut-Brion, con piccole sacche più a sud. 
 Il fattore distintivo di T4 è uno strato di ferro compatto sotto le ghiaie sabbiose. Il terreno sabbioso e ghiaioso consente alle giovani viti di sviluppare facilmente le radici, prima che incontrino lo strato di ferro compatto – costringendole a diffondersi orizzontalmente anziché in profondità. Questo strato compatto è fresco e trattiene l’acqua, nutrendo le viti negli anni caldi. Decup spiega come a luglio il terreno superficiale possa essere caldo, ma scavando si può percepire il freddo dello strato di ferro – qualcosa di perfetto per il Cabernet Sauvignon. A Montrose, T4 si trova tra i 12 e i 16 metri di altitudine, mentre altrove raggiunge un massimo di 22. T4 tende a correre vicino alla Gironda, che esercita un’influenza moderatrice – soprattutto a Montrose, dove l’estuario è largo 4,5 km (proteggendo notevolmente la tenuta dalle gelate, come nella dura annata 1991 – un anno in cui Montrose produsse il vino della vendemmia). 
 Come T4, anche T3 corre sotto molti crus classés – in particolare Cos d’Estournel, Mouton e Lafite. Con un terreno superficiale di ghiaia più sabbiosa, la differenza chiave è che T3 non ha lo strato di ferro di T4 – il suolo superficiale poggia invece direttamente su un sottosuolo di argilla-calcarea. Leggermente più elevata in altitudine (15-18 metri a Montrose, ma generalmente 20-26 nel Médoc), la profondità del suolo è notevole e le radici delle viti si spingono fino a tre metri o più a Montrose, racconta Decup. Con meno argilla nel suolo superficiale, i terreni drenano particolarmente bene, e le viti devono spingersi in profondità alla ricerca d’acqua. “In termini di espressione, non è affatto la stessa cosa,” dice Decup. Spiega che, pur producendo anche un Cabernet Sauvignon vigoroso, ha un’energia e una lunghezza particolari, un’austerità – ma “austerità positiva”. Le viti su T3 prosperano soprattutto negli anni caldi e secchi, aggiunge. Montrose conta un impressionante vigneto di 45 ettari su T4, 12 su T3, una porzione su quello che il team definisce un “suolo intermedio” – a metà tra le due terrazze – e una piccola parte su T5. E cosa succederà ora alle viti su T3? Sebbene lo château non lo confermi apertamente, è previsto un imbottigliamento separato di T3 – che dovrebbe arrivare sul mercato nel 2026, secondo le voci. Il resto delle uve confluisce in La Dame de Montrose, e una piccola parte in un terzo vino, Tertio de Montrose (precedentemente noto come Saint-Estèphe de Montrose), riservato esclusivamente a chi lavora nella tenuta. In totale, il Grand Vin rappresenta ora circa il 36% della produzione di Montrose – in calo rispetto a quasi il 45%. 
 “T3 e T4 sono, a nostro avviso, le terrazze che producono i migliori risultati viticoli,” dice Pierre Becheler, parlando del Médoc e dell’Haut-Médoc. Spiega però che nelle Graves la situazione è molto diversa, e che T2, quasi inesistente nel Médoc, produce risultati eccezionali. Non riesce a spiegare del tutto perché una terrazza funzioni meglio di un’altra, ma una delle ragioni per cui le terrazze sono così importanti è la loro influenza sulla disponibilità d’acqua. Con proporzioni variabili di argilla e dimensioni delle ghiaie, è un elemento chiave della viticoltura e, in ultima analisi, della qualità del vino. Tuttavia, pur avendo trascorso gran parte della sua carriera a studiare questi letti ghiaiosi, è molto chiaro: le terrazze sono un tassello molto importante del puzzle – ma non forniranno mai l’intera immagine. Alcune terrazze sono le migliori in certe appellations, dice, “ma non sappiamo davvero perché o come”. 
 Le complessità del terroir bordolese sono molteplici – e alcuni sostengono che il substrato roccioso, dalle argille più ricche ai calcari duri, sia più influente delle terrazze ghiaiose che li sovrastano. A ciò si aggiungono l’esposizione del pendio, la vicinanza alla Gironda e molti altri fattori che influenzano il microclima, senza dimenticare l’influenza umana – tutti elementi che contribuiscono al concetto di “terroir”. È entusiasmante vedere il sito spinto in primo piano, soprattutto insieme a una crescente attenzione alla sostenibilità nei vigneti. La conversazione si sta evolvendo – e, se l’annata 2023 di Montrose è un’indicazione, non potrà che elevare ulteriormente la qualità della regione.

Nel complesso, il raccolto 2024 è stato il più piccolo di Bordeaux dal 1991 – con la regione che ha prodotto 332 milioni di litri di vino. Ciò è in parte dovuto al calo della superficie vitata, con una resa media di 35 hl/ha – leggermente superiore a quella delle annate 2021, 2017 o 2013. Approfondendo, tuttavia, emerge una differenza significativa tra la Riva Sinistra e la Riva Destra – con 34,4 hl/ha a Saint-Emilion, Pomerol e Fronsac, contro una media di 30,8 hl/ha nel Médoc e nelle Graves. 
 È un anno in cui è difficile generalizzare, anche all’interno di ciascun comune, poiché tenute confinanti hanno prodotto risultati drasticamente diversi nell’annata. Come ha spiegato David Suire di Ch. Laroque, ci sono stati approcci molto vari alle sfide dell’anno, qualcosa che si riflette nei vini prodotti. 
 RIVE DESTRA 
 Quest’anno, ancora una volta, la Riva Destra ha offerto maggiore coerenza rispetto alla Sinistra. Sebbene sia stata comunque eterogenea, la dimensione più piccola delle tenute ha favorito il successo – rendendo più facile trattare e vendemmiare nelle strette finestre di tempo asciutto. Ovunque ci si trovasse, tuttavia, è stato un anno impegnativo: come ha detto Christian Moueix, “Il sole non si può sostituire.” Oltre al meteo più coperto, la grandine ha colpito Fronsac, Canon-Fronsac e Lalande-de-Pomerol a giugno, con alcune tenute che hanno perso l’intero raccolto, sebbene Pomerol e Saint-Emilion siano in gran parte scampate. 
 Pomerol 
 Per Noëmie Durantou (Ch. l’Eglise-Clinet), il 2024 è stato un avversario duro – ma uno contro cui sapeva di poter vincere, e ripensandoci, che partita è stata: come certamente indicano i suoi vini. Per lei, ci sono stati diversi elementi chiave nella stagione di crescita: la copertura nuvolosa che ha ridotto l’escursione termica (ricorda notti calde, insonni), l’invaiatura tardiva, le mattine nebbiose che hanno aumentato la pressione della botrite in prossimità della vendemmia e il livello di umidità dell’anno – 80% a Pomerol, contro un più normale 50-60%. 
 La grandine che ha colpito Lalande-de-Pomerol a giugno è sconfinata un po’ a Pomerol, ma la maggior parte delle tenute è sfuggita a impatti seri – con solo un leggero tocco avvertito a Lafleur a Feytit-Clinet, per esempio. Il trattamento delle vigne ha posto una sfida aggiuntiva per il team di Clinet, che deve tenere conto dell’orario della scuola adiacente, lavorando attorno alla presenza di bambini e/o genitori, oltre alle condizioni inclementi. 
 La vendemmia è iniziata a Pomerol leggermente prima che nella vicina Saint-Emilion, prendendo il via già dal 16 settembre, ma la maggior parte ha iniziato a portare in cantina il Merlot dal 20 del mese, e il Cabernet è stato completato entro il 4 ottobre (sebbene alcuni produttori avessero tutto in cantina entro la fine di settembre). Le rese sono variate in modo significativo – dal secondo raccolto più piccolo dal 1991 a Belle-Brise al secondo più grande degli ultimi 25 anni a Lafleur. 
 Jeremy Chasseuil (Feytit-Clinet) ha sottolineato come, per lui, lasciare il vino sulle fecce per due mesi sia stato fondamentale – aiutando a costruire la texture, rilasciando polisaccaridi che conferiscono peso al centro bocca del vino. Sebbene il 2024 non abbia prodotto gli stili più opulenti di Pomerol, i migliori conservano una trama soffice e un’esoticità negli aromi che completa l’acidità naturalmente elevata dell’anno. Sebbene la qualità non sia del tutto coerente qui, ci sono molti punti di forza. 
 I nostri preferiti a Pomerol: Belle-Brise, Eglise-Clinet, Guillot Clauzel, La Conseillante, Lafleur, Le Pin, Vieux Château Certan Saint-Emilion 
 C’è stata una differenza notevole tra Pomerol e Saint-Emilion – con Saint-Emilion che ha visto significativamente più pioggia tra aprile e giugno, con 278 mm contro 199 mm a Pomerol. Nonostante ciò, l’altopiano calcareo della regione ha dato il meglio – permettendo all’acqua di drenare lontano dalle vigne, nonostante abbia raggiunto livelli record (ad Ausone, il livello nel loro pozzo è stato il più alto di sempre). Agosto, tuttavia, è stato significativamente più secco sulla Riva Destra – con circa la metà delle precipitazioni normali. 
 Qui la vendemmia è iniziata un po’ più tardi. Sebbene alcuni abbiano iniziato già il 17 settembre (Cheval Blanc, Canon, per esempio), la maggior parte ha aspettato fino al 27, e diverse tenute hanno rimandato fino ai primi di ottobre. Nonostante le sfide dell’anno (“È stata una guerra,” ha detto Pierre-Olivier Clouet di Cheval Blanc), la resa complessiva dell’appellazione è risultata abbastanza nella media – sebbene variata tra le tenute. 
 Ad Angélus, è stata la 40ª vendemmia di Hubert de Boüard de Laforest, e la bottiglia reca una sezione di tronco d’albero con 40 anelli in tributo. A Ch. Beauséjour, è stata la prima annata prodotta nella nuova cantina di Joséphine Duffau-Lagarrosse, qualcosa di cui è stata particolarmente grata, poiché le ha permesso di suddividere il vigneto in parcelle più piccole e lavorare con maggiore precisione. 
 Saint-Emilion è così grande che inevitabilmente quest’anno c’è un’ampia gamma di vini. Sebbene alcuni possano risultare eccessivamente taglienti, austeri o astringenti, ci sono vini molto impressionanti, testurizzati, stratificati che mantengono tensione e offrono al contempo abbondanza di frutto e peso. Cheval Blanc, per esempio, è un vino molto serio che avrà bisogno di tempo – un vero contrasto con molti dei 2024 destinati a essere approcciabili presto. Vale la pena evidenziare Ch. Laroque, una tenuta che osserviamo da un po’, dove David Suire continua a produrre vini dal valore straordinario. 
 I nostri preferiti a Saint-Emilion: Ausone, Cheval Blanc, Clos de Sarpe, Figeac, L’If, Laroque, Tertre Roteboeuf RIVA SINISTRA 
 Le rese sulla Riva Sinistra – a parte i bianchi – sono state in genere inferiori rispetto alla Destra. Variano significativamente tra le tenute, tuttavia, con rese che vanno dal minimo storico alla normalità. Sebbene ci siano annate in cui siti minori nel Médoc e nell’Haut-Médoc eccellono, il 2024 in gran parte non lo è stato – questa è stata un’annata in cui la qualità del terroir, così come i mezzi per effettuare una selezione rigorosa, sono stati fondamentali. Abbiamo riscontrato che la qualità qui era ancora più eterogenea che nel resto della Gironda, tuttavia ci sono ancora vini brillanti da trovare. 
 Saint-Estèphe 
 La qualità a Saint-Estèphe è mista nel 2024. La posizione più fresca e settentrionale del comune non è stata necessariamente un vantaggio quest’anno, né lo sono stati i suoli più ricchi di argilla – che sono stati un tale vantaggio nelle recenti annate calde e secche. Le tenute con vigne su ghiaie ben drenanti se la sono cavata meglio, tuttavia ci sono molte variabili nell’equazione della qualità quest’anno. 
 Sebbene non tutte le tenute abbiano prosperato, ci sono qui picchi seri, con Montrose in lizza per il vino dell’annata – offrendo un livello di densità e complessità che si è davvero distinto nelle nostre degustazioni. È la seconda versione del loro Grand Vin a provenire esclusivamente dalla Terrazza Quattro (T4), una decisione che sta chiaramente dando frutti, e abbiamo anche avuto il primo assaggio del vino non ancora rilasciato prodotto da T3, chiamato “Terrasse 3” – un vino che varrà la pena cercare. Il team di Montrose ha sottolineato come l’appellazione abbia visto meno pioggia tra il 1° agosto e l’8 settembre rispetto a quelle più a sud, ricevendo solo 50 mm in questo periodo critico (contro 80 mm per Margaux e 120 mm per Pessac-Léognan), qualcosa che hanno ritenuto fondamentale per il loro successo. 
 Calon-Ségur è stata una delle diverse tenute che hanno scelto di abbandonare l’organico quest’anno, usando trattamenti convenzionali tra il germogliamento e la fioritura, prima di tornare al loro regime normale, consentendo loro di ottenere la stessa resa del 2023 a 45 hl/ha (contro 29 hl/ha a Cos d’Estournel, che ha proseguito il percorso verso la certificazione biologica). Il Direttore Tecnico Vincent Millet – alla guida dell’intero portafoglio di tenute di Calon, incluso Ch. le Prieuré a Saint-Emilion e Vray Croix de Gay a Pomerol – ha osservato come il Cabernet Sauvignon a maturazione più tardiva sia stato particolarmente delicato quest’anno, rendendo la Riva Sinistra più impegnativa della Destra nell’annata. 
 I nostri preferiti a Saint-Estèphe: Montrose Pauillac 
 Pauillac ha avuto la resa più bassa di qualsiasi comune della Riva Sinistra quest’anno, con una media nell’appellazione di 29,5 hl/ha (contro una media ventennale di 45,7 hl/ha). Tra le tenute, le cifre sono variate enormemente – dal minuscolo 11 hl/ha prodotto a Ch. Latour (un livello più tipico di Sauternes) ai 33 hl/ha di Ch. Lafite Rothschild, per esempio, guardando a due tenute che lavorano in biologico. Giugno è stato più secco qui che altrove, il che significa che le vigne hanno iniziato a soffrire di stress idrico prima – con alcune proprietà che hanno persino affermato di aver visto lo sviluppo delle viti fermarsi in agosto, con le prime piogge a fine mese come gradita tregua. 
 La vendemmia qui si è protratta per i primi 10 giorni di ottobre, con la botrite che ha influito in modo significativo sulle rese. Pichon Baron ha stimato di aver perso circa 10 hl/ha per marciume – solo uno dei sacrifici che hanno reso il 2024 un’annata così costosa da produrre. I vini risultanti tendono ad avere quote più alte di Cabernet Sauvignon, e variano sia nello stile che nella qualità. In generale, si tratta di Pauillac di stile più leggero, senza la fermezza o la potenza che questa appellazione può spesso offrire. Sebbene alcuni non abbiano sufficiente concentrazione o struttura, i migliori hanno la tipica grafite di Pauillac, completata da floreali più delicati, frutto croccante, una qualità salina e tannini fini. 
 L’annata segna anche i 100 anni di Batailley sotto la famiglia Borie-Castéja, meritando un’etichetta commemorativa per questo Claret di riferimento, oltre a un formato speciale Marie-Jeanne. 
 I nostri preferiti a Pauillac: Batailley, Lafite Rothschild, Pichon Comtesse, Pontet-Canet Saint-Julien 
 Ai Chx Léoville e Langoa Barton, Damien Barton Sartorius ha paragonato il 2024 alla corsa di una maratona – faticosa, ma soddisfacente, e che ti lascia pronto a iscriverti alla prossima. La resa media per l’appellazione è stata leggermente superiore a quella di Pauillac, con 32,5 hl/ha – comunque quasi il 25% in meno rispetto alla media trentennale. Come più a nord, tuttavia, la media è solo una media: Beychevelle ha raccolto a 43 hl/ha, mentre la selezione ha portato la resa a 23,6 hl/ha a Ducru-Beaucaillou (con il team che ha scartato quasi 10 hl/ha), e le cifre sono variate in modo significativo tra le tenute. 
 A Beychevelle, Philippe Blanc ha spiegato come, dopo appena 4 mm di pioggia tra il 1° e il 28 agosto, la pioggia sia ricominciata e non si sia più fermata. Il loro Merlot è stato maggiormente colpito dalla peronospora e quindi l’assemblaggio è più alto in Cabernet Sauvignon (55%) – qualcosa riscontrato anche altrove. La cattiva fioritura e la conseguente colatura hanno comportato grappoli più spargoli, ha spiegato Barton Sartorius, qualcosa che ritiene li abbia davvero aiutati a evitare una significativa pressione di botrite a fine stagione. 
 La dimensione più piccola di Saint-Julien fa sì che sia un po’ più coerente di Pauillac, tuttavia non è del tutto uniforme. Il frutto tende a essere un po’ più dolce, pur restando sullo spettro del rosso piuttosto che del nero, i vini offrono un’acidità brillante e i migliori tannini fini e buon equilibrio, con il rovere perfettamente integrato. 
 I nostri preferiti a Saint-Julien: Ducru-Beaucaillou, Léoville Barton Margaux 
 Sebbene nessuna appellazione sia coerente nel 2024, Margaux ha prodotto vini particolarmente impressionanti. Le precipitazioni potrebbero essere state più alte qui che più a nord, ma il microclima leggermente più caldo e i suoli poco profondi hanno forse permesso alle uve di maturare prima e più pienamente.  Comunque lo si spieghi, i risultati qui parlano da soli – con vini che combinano graziosi, inebrianti floreali con frutto dolce e soffice, oltre a tannini fini ma persistenti, cipriati: vini seri che meriterebbero considerazione in qualsiasi annata. Questa è stata anche l’unica appellazione in cui i secondi vini – come Alter Ego de Palmer e Pavillon Rouge – hanno mostrato una qualità reale. 
 I nostri preferiti a Margaux: Brane-Cantenac, Giscours, Palmer, Margaux, Rauzan-Ségla Graves + Pessac-Léognan 
 Le rese per i rossi a Pessac-Léognan sono state – in modo insolito per l’anno – nella media. I bianchi sono discussi separatamente sotto, ma i rossi di Graves e Pessac-Léognan sono stati vari quanto altrove. Ci sono, tuttavia, alcuni vini affascinanti e alcuni molto impressionanti che smentiscono la reputazione dell’annata. 
 Questa regione meridionale ha visto più pioggia in agosto, non beneficiando forse dello stress idrico che è stato così importante altrove – ma la pioggia in quel mese non è stata eccessiva, solo in linea con la norma. A Smith Haut Lafitte, settembre ha visto più di tre volte la pioggia media (164 mm contro 48 mm), rendendo la vendemmia tutt’altro che facile. 
 Sebbene Carmes Haut-Brion abbia raccolto 40 hl/ha, ha vinificato solo 24 hl/ha – un altro esempio della selezione estrema messa in atto quest’anno dalle tenute focalizzate sulla qualità. Guillaume Pouthier – che offre sempre una prospettiva unica su un’annata – sta facendo qualcosa di diverso nell’affinamento quest’anno, riducendo la temperatura della cantina da 16°C a 12°C durante i due anni di élevage, per preservare il profilo fruttato del vino e favorire la precipitazione tartarica, riducendo così il livello di acidità. Il tempo dirà come funzionerà, quindi sarà affascinante degustare di nuovo il vino in bottiglia. 
 Domaine de Chevalier ha prodotto vini particolarmente impressionanti quest’anno e, sebbene lavorino da lungo tempo in biologico e biodinamico, quest’anno hanno preso la difficile decisione di usare trattamenti convenzionali – qualcosa che è stato premiato, con rese generose (48 hl/ha) e qualità molto elevata. 
 I nostri preferiti in Graves + Pessac-Léognan: Les Carmes Haut-Brion, Domaine de Chevalier, La Mission Haut-Brion Bianchi secchi 
 Alcuni parlano in estasi dei bianchi secchi del 2024 – e, sebbene ci siano assolutamente bianchi brillanti, la qualità è ben lontana dall’essere uniforme. 
 Le prime uve di Sauvignon Blanc sono state raccolte a Sauternes il 20 agosto, sebbene la maggior parte dei produttori con cui abbiamo parlato abbia vendemmiato tra la fine di agosto e l’inizio di settembre, con l’ultimo Sémillon portato in cantina il 23 settembre. La proprietaria Florence Cathiard ritiene che il risultato sia “uno dei [loro] migliori bianchi”. Allo stesso modo a Ch. Margaux, hanno fatto un po’ più di bâtonnage per dare peso al Pavillon Blanc – ed è una delle stelle dell’anno. 
 In alcuni, si avverte l’eccesso d’acqua della stagione di crescita – le rese generose sfociano in vini che non hanno sufficiente concentrazione. Il Sauvignon Blanc sembra essersela cavata meglio del Sémillon, più suscettibile al marciume e più difficile da portare a maturità fenolica – e molti dei nostri preferiti erano puro Sauvignon, o fortemente guidati dalla varietà. 
 I paragoni sono stati vari – sebbene il 2021 fosse comune per la spina acida e le condizioni più fresche. A Lafleur, Omri Ram è convinto che il 2024 Les Champs Libres sia uno dei loro migliori, posizionandosi comodamente accanto al 2023 e al 2021. A Ch.  Le uve che sono arrivate in vasca offrivano livelli di acidità elevati, aromaticità precise, ma non la lussureggiante concentrazione delle annate davvero migliori. In base alle nostre degustazioni, i vini risultanti sono da buoni a molto buoni, se non proprio eccezionali, ma possono avere particolare appeal per i consumatori che preferiscono uno stile di vino dolce più leggero – con acidità più brillante e livelli di zucchero residuo leggermente inferiori. Sono vibranti e puri, con molta concentrazione, sebbene non così edonistici come gli anni più celebrati – e saranno approcciabili in una fase più precoce della loro vita.

Calon Ségur was my first ever en primeur purchase. There was such hype around the 2005 vintage and I was desperate to get my hands on something, anything. At the time I was a delivery driver for a small wine merchant and it was a luxury, but I could just afford a 12-bottle case of Calon Ségur. That alone is proof of just how cheap this wine was at the time, and how little in demand. The château always had pedigree, however. It was classified as a Third Growth in 1855 – a ranking that may even have been an underestimation, given its reputation today. Evidence of wine-growing on the estate dates all the way back to the 12th century. Since then, the property has passed through the hands of some of the most important winemaking families in Bordeaux. By 1718, the Marquis de Calon owned not just Calon Ségur but Lafite Rothschild, Latour and Mouton Rothschild. With the exception of Ch. Margaux, all the future Médoc First Growths were under his management, but he famously said, “I make wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart is at Calon.” The quote inspired the heart that adorns every bottle. More recently, the vintages produced under Georges Gasqueton in the 1920s, ’40s and ’50s remain legendary. So, what went wrong? How could an estate, favoured over Lafite and Latour, fall so far from grace? In modern times, the blame seems to have been lain firmly at the feet of Madame Denise Gasqueton who took over the property after her husband died in 1995 and managed it until her death in 2011. But current Technical Director Vincent Millet says this is an unfair assumption. And he should know. If there has been one constant at Calon Ségur through its complete transformation, it is him – having started working at Calon in 2006. “Gasqueton was very traditional in her approach,” says Millet, “but her methods were not uncommon at the time.” Millet explains how the 1970s, ’80s and even ’90s were a lean era in the Médoc. Prices for the wines hit rock bottom and costs had to be cut to survive. Philippe Gasqueton – her husband – had instigated a mass uprooting of Calon Ségur’s vines, hoping to save on labour costs, which were the estate’s biggest outgoing. Although it’s hard to believe now, they pulled up every other row of vines. While Saint-Estèphe had a great reputation for Cabernet Sauvignon, it was harder to grow than the earlier-ripening Merlot, which typically produced more fruit. As Merlot gained in popularity, plantings in the Calon vineyards grew. By the time Millet joined the estate, Merlot represented 50% of the blend at Calon.  Millet is not critical of Gasqueton’s decisions. “It was necessary to survive,” he says. But he knew Merlot was not the best variety for the Médoc and he was keen to make changes. He’d spent five years working with Ch. Margaux, Mouton, Latour, Pétrus, Haut-Brion and Lafite Rothschild, examining the effects of filtration on wine. He then joined Ch. Margaux, heading up their research development department for eight years. By the time he reached Calon, he knew that changes in the vineyard would rekindle its reputation – a disappointment to Madame Gasqueton who had invested in a new winery just a few years earlier. But Gasqueton was open to Millet’s ideas and he convinced her to build a truly state-of-the-art winery at their other estate, Ch. Capbern. “Capbern became a laboratory,” explains Millet. It was their playground, providing much of the research that would inform the work at Calon. Soon before Millet’s arrival, Gasqueton started restructuring the vineyards to make sure they met the appellation’s minimum vine density. Millet then started dividing up the vineyard and identifying the best plots and replacing the Merlot. Importantly he also insisted that rather than harvesting the Cabernet straight after the Merlot, they would wait for the fruit to be fully ripe – something he remembers having to persuade Gasqueton was necessary. “We have to act when the grapes tell us to, not the other way around,” he explains. By 2008, Cabernet Sauvignon once again represented 80% of the vineyard – the same proportion as in the estate’s legendary period in the early 20th century. By the time Gasqueton passed away in 2011, the roadmap for changing Calon’s fortunes was already in place. The estate was purchased by the insurance company Suravenir in 2012. And the new owners, much to Millet’s delight, were happy to invest in the property. As the financial constraints lessened, Millet was able to implement changes rapidly. Under the new management, Millet found he could be more selective with the fruit. He could easily distinguish the best plots, as they were all now vinified separately. Amazingly, production of the Grand Vin dropped by almost half. Between 2000 and 2005 production sat at around 180,000-200,000 bottles a year. Today they make just 100,000 bottles of the Grand Vin.  The second wine Marquis de Calon became the expression of Merlot at Calon Ségur (almost a copy of Calon’s profile under Madame Gasqueton). But today Calon Ségur is distinctly Cabernet-driven and it is what Millet believes is the best interpretation of Calon Ségur and Saint-Estèphe’s terroir. There’s much more to the wine than Cabernet, however. “Calon Ségur is all about finesse,” he says. “It doesn’t have the terroir to make the powerful wines of Ch. Montrose or Cos d’Estournel. The wine would be too rustic if we tried to make it more powerful.” It’s this elegance that makes it unique in the appellation, defying Saint-Estèphe’s reputation for chunky, slightly awkward tannins. Today, the estate is firing on all cylinders and it has become the darling of Saint-Estèphe.  With its change in fortune, financial security and the capable hands of Vincent Millet, the property has rediscovered its terroir – the one thing that hasn’t changed over the centuries. I still have one bottle left of that first case of 2005 I bought – and it turns out, despite being the only thing I could afford, it was a brilliant buy. Having been able to taste through every vintage since has been fascinating, allowing me to follow the estate’s journey. Maybe with the final bottle, I will toast its 20th birthday. It will neatly mark a fascinating transformation of this once ugly duckling estate – that today has become Saint-Estèphe’s most elegant. Calon Ségur: the ugly duckling of Saint-Estèphe

James Suckling First out of the gate is James Suckling, who is in complete agreement with what we have been told by the châteaux and tasted so far: this is another great vintage for both the Left and Right Bank, forming the third in a trilogy of great vintages for Bordeaux. He writes, “The Médoc reds are closer in character to the 2019 vintage with more linear and finer tannins and precise, pure cabernet fruit while the Right Bank, particularly Pomerol and St.Emilion, is more like 2018 with reds that have more flamboyant fruit and creamier, densely ripe tannins.” While he had heard reports of heterogeneity, 90% of what he has tasted “show an outstanding quality level from first growths to petit chateaux”. He feels that Merlot has excelled, however there are plenty of outstanding wines in the Médoc too – indeed several worthy of perfect scores. Suckling’s highlights: Haut-Brion, Margaux, Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Hosanna, La Fleur-Pétrus, Smith Haut-Lafitte, Le Gay, L’Eglise-Clinet, Troplong-Mondot, Angélus, Ducru-Beaucaillou, L’Evangile, Trotte Vieille Read more of James Suckling’s thoughts on the vintage on his site Jane Anson – Decanter Jane Anson rates the 2020 vintage four out of five, similar in quality to 2018 but lower than the ’19 and ’16 vintages. While she believes the Right Bank is similar in style to 1989 or the 2018s, she feels the Left Bank has more in common with 1996, 2000 and 2006 due to the tannic profile caused by the dry summer months. “You will find plenty of racy, supple tannins that power forward and have a sense of energy, but also tannins that are a little dry and sometimes underripe if the drought led to blockages,” she says. Despite many similarities in terms of tannin concentration to 2010 and ’16, she feels overall the 2020 vintage is not as consistent as either of these years. For her, the biggest potential issue was this risk of unripe tannins, typically in the Cabernet Sauvignon, mostly affecting the Left Bank. While she notes that some properties’ second wines bear the brunt of this, she commends the exceptional efforts of La Croix Ducru-Beacaillou, Mondot and Blason de l’Evangile. She highlights, however, that 2020 continues a trend in the region, with the best wines performing “a sleight of hand from the vintage conditions” – something that she feels comes from “a confidence that I find in Bordeaux today, where there no longer seems to be the need to choose the biggest tannins for the main estate wine, and instead many choose to prioritise site expression.” All her potential 100-point wines (of which there are five) come from the Right Bank, bar Ch. Margaux which takes the title of wine of the vintage on the Left Bank, while Ch. Canon steals the top spot on the Right. Collectively, they’ve tasted their way through the majority of major releases, publishing a range of articles around the vintage including tasting reports on the Left Bank, Right Bank and white wines of Bordeaux 2020. Perhaps most refreshing to hear is a positive article on the “revolution” that is taking place in Bordeaux when it comes to precision viticulture leading to
“delightfully fresh, expressive, 'new old' wines”. As for 2020, “There are admittedly some stunningly good 2020s, even if [it] is not as consistent a vintage as 2019,” Robinson says. Lawther highlights the surprising freshness of the wines, positioning it somewhere between ’18 and ’19. The lower alcohol levels on the Left Bank “delightfully combine the classicism of traditional Bordeaux with modern winemaking and vine-growing sophistication”. Similarly to Anson’s report, Robinson feels some of the later-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon wouldn’t have reached full maturity before the threat of early October storms forced
vignerons to pick by 30th September (something that didn’t impact the Right Bank with its earlier-ripening Merlot). She feels, however, the overall volume produced on the Left Bank allowed estates to be extremely selective, including only the finest lots in the Grand Vin. All in all, the team declares it a vintage that falls in favour of the Right Bank – with wines that have led Robinson herself to “[fall] back in love with” Saint-Emilion. On the Left, however, Robinson notes particular consistency in the wines of Graves/Pessac-Léognan,  jancisrobinson.com’s highlights: Lafleur, Margaux, Lafite Rothschild, Cos d’Estournel, Haut-Brion, Mouton Rothschild, Pétrus, Angélus, Pichon Baron, Vieux Château Certan, Montrose, Ausone, La Lagune, Léoville Barton, Prieuré-Lichine, Rauzan-Gassies, du Tertre, Kirwan, Canon, Figeac, Pavie Read the team's full report on jancisrobinson.com Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW – Wine Advocate For Wine Advocate’s Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, 2020 is “an enigma – a vintage that has been more difficult to understand than 2018 or 2019, with far more potential and, in some cases, greater growing season complexities than even 2017 (the year of the devastating frosts).” Despite comparisons with 2018, the wines are, in her view, very different. She highlights the differences between Left and Right Banks this year – with “more weight and generosity” in the latter, and more varied quality on the Left, noting that some from the Médoc lacked mid-palate weight. The key she thinks was the impact of the August rains: welcome relief for some, too late for others, and too much (therefore diluting the fruit) for certain properties in the Médoc in particular.  Overall she feels the variability brings 2020 in line with 2017 in some ways, however thinks that, at its best, the vintage is up alongside 2018 and 2019: “For some areas and terroirs, this is absolutely the third outstanding vintage.”  She notes that it is a simplification too far to declare it a Merlot vintage, as there are excellent wines from both Cabernets too. Pomerol and Saint-Emilion impressed her, while Fronsac and the Côtes de Castillon offer some great-value wines. Like us, she notes some outstanding performances from Pessac-Léognan. In the Médoc, she emphasises the importance of terroirs
with sufficient gravel to drain the August rains, as well as the budget and manpower to do the necessary work to manage the year’s challenging conditions. On the Right Bank, she characterises the best wines as “beautifully pure and perfumed expressions of ripeness”. Pessac is for her “staunchly earthy/savory”, while she warns some are dilute, the Médoc’s finest are “a paradox – lighter bodied, elegant, perfumed head-turners”. He feels it is “better than 2018 but doesn’t quite reach the peaks of 2019”.  While he describes 2018 as more hedonistic and 2019 elegant and purer, he believes the difference between 2019 and 2020 is marginal. “There are instances where 2020 will surpass 2018 and 2019,” he says, believing this will become clearer in bottle.  In his view, lower alcohols on the Left Bank have “allowed for greater expression of individual terroirs and more salinity in the wines”, but the finest examples are wines that also have great concentration. In contrast, the alcohol levels on the Right Bank are generally higher than in 2019 and the best wines of the vintage were those that managed to retain elegance. The 2020s’ slightly firmer tannins in general, Martin believes, will “merit long-term cellaring” compared to the 2019, which can be enjoyed earlier.    Martin highlights the cool nights in August and September as a key factor in determining the success of a Bordeaux vintage, helping the wines retain acidity – and 2020 had just this. These cool nights mean the wines have “excellent acidity levels that engender fresh wines with ample tension”.  As has been the case in the last three vintages, he has found greater consistency in the top hierarchy of wines, where the finer terroirs have kept the vines healthy through a challenging growing season. Despite this, he says there are “still a raft of excellent wines punching above their weight outside the famous appellations, representing outstanding value”.   Neal Martin’s highlights: Margaux, Trotanoy, La Mission Haut-Brion, Canon, Figeac, La Conseillante, L’Eglise Clinet, Lafite, La Gaffelière, Haut-Brion, Léoville Las Cases, Pichon Lalande, Mouton Rothschild, Vieux Château Certan, De Pez, Grand-Puy-Ducasse, La Bridane, Marojallia, La Voûte, Le Chemin, Latour-Martillac and Latour-Martillac Blanc  Read Neal Martin’s full report on Vinous  Jeb Dunnuck  Jeb Dunnuck is undeniably enthusiastic about 2020, declaring it “unquestionably a great vintage”.  For him, the wines more focused than 2018, but denser than 2019 – but feels it sits just behind these two and 2016 in the rankings. He notes that the early season rains have given the wines “a beautiful sense of purity”. As almost everyone has noted, it is this purity and freshness from such a warm vintage that is surprising.  He highlights the advantage of clay and limestone soils, as well as old vines. For him Pomerol is the star of the vintage (with “a bevy of legendary wines”), while Saint-Emilion and Pessac-Léognan also thrived. While he believes 2020 is not as consistent as 2019 or even 2018, he does believe the best examples are “incredibly exciting” and “unquestionably dazzling” wines.   For Galloni, the most important signature of 2020 is “a balance of richness and energy” which he believes is “highly unusual”. From his interviews with winemakers, he surmises that the cold August/September nights, along with the high seed count in the berries are the reasons behind the freshness of the wines, making them “sizzle with brightness and mineral-drenched vibrancy”.   He identifies Pessac-Léognan as the most consistent appellation of the vintage, which benefitted most from summer rains. The Left Bank, more generally, he says is more about “linearity and persistence rather than volume”, providing the wines with a classic feel and notably lower alcohols. The wine world should have descended on Bordeaux this week to taste the 2019 vintage from barrel and make their assessments, with the chateaux initially due to release the wines from mid-April onwards. However, it comes as no surprise, the biggest event of the fine wine year is currently on ice. While the Bordelais speculate on the en primeur ice thawing somewhere between May and July, vintage reports are starting to trickle in from the turreted chateaux, as well as the independent assessment of the vintage from the Associate Professor of Oenology at the University of Bordeaux, Dr Axel Marchal - between them they provide us with a tantalising taste of what's to come. Associate Professor of Oenology, Dr Axel Marchal, and his colleagues at the University of Bordeaux, are tasked with providing an annual and independent assessment of the vintage. Based on the report, 2019 is looking like a must-have.  The academic team bases its assessment on weather data and has a tick-list of five conditions throughout the growing season. Tick at least three of the five boxes and you can expect a very good vintage. Appearing on a webinar this week hosted by Jane Anson, Bordeaux correspondent for Decanter, Marchal explained that in the best soils four of the five parameters were fully satisfied and the remaining condition of flowering was at least partially
met - making it an a highly promising vintage from an academic perspective.  It is incredibly rare that all five conditions are fully satisfied. In fact Axel explains that in regards to quality of ripening there is an emphasis on the final two conditions being met - dryness during veraison and clement weather during harvest - both of which were ideal in 2019, setting us up for a stellar vintage.  The five conditions relate to 1) flowering; 2) fruit set; 3) shoot growth reaching completion and ending just prior to veraison, 4) dryness during veraison and 5) clement weather during harvest – ensuring no dilution or rot when grapes reach maturity and they are at their most susceptible. Axel reports rapid, homogenous, early budburst following a warm spring provides ideal
conditions for flowering, resulting in good yields and most importantly a homogeneity
when ripening. 2019 had this early warm start to the season yet there were some challenges, notably with some Merlot vines at flowering suffering some millederange resulting in a reduction of yields and uneven flowering.  A dry early summer saw perfect conditions for fruit set and in the best soils shoot growth reached maturity ending just before veraison, when the energy of the plant switches to the ripening of the grapes. August and September provided perfect conditions for veraison right up until harvest with no hydric pressure thanks to good reserves of water and sporadic rain
episodes throughout the period. The harvest was picked in beautiful clement weather. Quality assured, what should we expect stylistically? "I'm very impressed by the vintage," said Nicolas Glumineau from Pauillac's Chateau Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande. "It's like the comparison between '09 and '10; '18 is more like '09 because it's opulent and expressive and '19 is more like '10 with its tension and precision. [The 2019 vintage] is much more my personal style as a wine lover." Eric Kohler and Jean-Sebastien Philippe of Chateau Lafite Rothschild said much the same stating, “Our gut feel is that just as there will always be a discussion between 2009 and 2010, we will have the same between 2018 and 2019. 2018 being closer to 2009, and 2019 being closer to 2010.” Heading even further up the Medoc to the most northerly appellation of St-Estephe, the head of Chateau Phelan-Segur Veronique Dausse summarises the wine style that we can expect: "Combining the qualities of concentration, structure, ripeness and length, 2019 also has the freshness necessary for the balance of great Bordeaux wines," she says. "The upright and precise character of this 2019 vintage is also surprising, given the solid alcohol degrees." As they say, "good things come to those who wait" - and with the 2019 vintage this has never been more true.

JAMES SUCKLING James Suckling was the first out with his report, published on 19th April, before most people have made it out to taste the new vintage. He’s not shying away from calling this a truly great vintage, saying “it sets a new benchmark for Bordeaux”. It’s the 40th vintage he has tasted en primeur, and he feels it proves the region’s ability to face the challenges of climate change, with its uniquely hot and dry conditions. He notes that while the reds are the undoubted star, it is also a great vintage for Sauternes – with botrytis development in mid-October that produced exceptional wines.  While the growing season urges parallels with 2003, the wines are totally different. The 2022s “can be flamboyant, fruity and tannic, yet they have a freshness and form that give them energy and vitality”, he writes. While he found a few wines that were over the top, he generally felt there was consistent quality across the spectrum, from more modest estates to the grandest châteaux, with the wines “exceptional”. He gives nine potential 100-point scores, versus only one last year (for Lafaurie-Peyraguey in Sauternes – an address he also praises this year).  Suckling’s highlights: Cheval Blanc, Lafaurie-Peyraguey, Lafite-Rothschild, Le Pin, Léoville Las Cases, Pontet-Canet, Trotanoy, Pavillon Blanc du Ch. Margaux, Angélus, Canon Read James Suckling’s full report  WILLIAM KELLEY – WINE ADVOCATE  Publishing his report on the Friday of Primeurs week, William Kelley defines 2022 as “an amplifier” – highlighting differences between sites and how producers work both in the vineyard and winery. “Bordeaux has produced some monumental wines in 2022, but unlike many of the great vintages of the 20th century, the year was not a rising tide that raised all boats,” he says. The best wines offer “remarkable concentration, energy and harmony” but there are some that are “jammy, astringent and rustic”. He highlights that those with higher organic matter in their soils and who managed their canopies well were rewarded. He argues that vines adapted to the long, dry season, and the experience of recent warm vintages ensured that 2022 was not another 2003 – despite its extreme, hot, dry conditions. He warns that the frequently high pHs are a risk for the final hurdle – with an increased chance of volatile acidity and Brettanomyces, suggesting that although few samples showed these faults during the en primeur tastings, “it is certain that some producers will trip before the finish line this year”. Nevertheless, he is clearly impressed by the best wines – with eight potential 100-point scores in the mix. In a first, the work was divided between Kelley and Yohan Castaing, a relatively new member to the Wine Advocate team – so there are notes from both. The highlights noted below are 12 specifically recommended. Kelley’s highlights: Berliquet, Bourgneuf, Branaire-Ducru, Clos Manou, Dame de Montrose, De Retout, Domaine de l’A, Grand Village, Haut Marbuzet, Langoa Barton, Larrivet Haut-Brion, Mangot Read Kelley’s full report, notes and scores on the Wine Advocate GEORGIE HINDLE – DECANTER  Despite the year’s extreme conditions, Decanter’s Bordeaux correspondent Georgie Hindle writes that “a surprisingly large number of vineyards and their growers prevailed against the odds to create a wealth of exceptional wines in 2022”. She feels there are “both serious highs and lows”, but “some estates produced their best-ever bottles” – with “supple textures, excellent definition, long finishes and a sheer brightness and energy that has produced some of the most compelling wines I’ve ever tasted at this early stage”. She also emphasises how, despite being similarly hot, the year is not another 2003. For Hindle, the Margaux appellation was a highlight, as were the wines from the Haut-Médoc, as well as the top end of Saint-Emilion. She has pulled out a list of “coup de coeur" wines – those that were heart-stoppingly good, and it is those that feature as her highlights below. Hindle’s highlights: Beauséjour Duffau Lagarrosse, Canon, Cheval Blanc, Clos Fourtet, Figeac, Larcis-Ducasse, Laroque, Troplong Mondot, Les Carmes Haut-Brion, Smith Haut Lafitte, Brane-Cantenac, Giscours, Branaire-Ducru, Gruaud-Larose, Léoville-Las Cases, Pichon Comtesse, Montrose, Phélan Ségur, La Conseillante, La Fleur-Pétrus, Vieux Château Certan, Clos du Clocher, Pétrus Read Hindle’s full report, notes and scores on Decanter ANTONIO GALLONI – VINOUS  The first of the two Vinous reports comes from Antonio Galloni, who declares the best wines of the vintage to be “magnificent, viscerally thrilling wines” – “some of the most memorable young wines [he has] ever tasted” – although does temper this enthusiasm by saying that some selection is warranted. Running through the growing season, he highlights how “patience and technology” were critical – with larger numbers of smaller vats, allowing producers to harvest only what was perfectly ripe. The greatest surprise, of course, is the wines – not rich and opulent as for 2009 or 2018, but wines that “combine flavour intensity, energy and finesse in a way that I can only describe as magical”. He repeats the refrain that the wines bode well for Bordeaux’s fate in the face of climate change, and is clearly enchanted by the best wines. He flags that some of the wines are “a bit fragile” and that “élevage will make or break them”, not feeling it’s totally consistent below the top tier. He does, however, pull out a handful of over-performers, which we’ve listed as his highlights below. For him, the advancements in viticulture and winemaking are what define 2022 – wines of “notable depth and freshness without excess weight”, but exactly why they turned out the way they did remains something of a mystery. Galloni’s highlights: Alter Ego de Palmer, Beau-Séjour Bécot, Brane-Cantenac, Clos Puy Arnaud, Clos Saint-Julien, Figeac, Les Forts de Latour, Giscours, La Conseillante, La Gaffelière, Lafon-Rochet, Larcis-Ducasse, Léoville Las Cases, Le Pin Beausoleil, Les Carmes Haut-Brion, Malartic Lagravière, Moulin Saint-Georges, Puyblanquet, Quinault l’Enclos Read Galloni’s full report, notes and scores on Vinous JEB DUNNUCK  Jen Dunnuck is clear that the best 2022s are set to be “legendary”, with “brilliant wines from throughout the region”, but highlights that “there are dramatically different styles in the vintage” – emphasising that this is different to quality, which is “incredibly high”. The vintage is united by its “theme of ripeness and power”, yet yields, winemaking and terroir have all resulted in the aforementioned diversity. He finds the wines of the northern Médoc to be “powerful, concentrated, majestic wines showing remarkable purity and vibrance” and is fast to defend both the pH and alcohol levels, with the former sitting at or below the level of the 2020s and the alcohols “well within the normal ranges of 2009, 2010, 2015, 2018, 2019 and 2020, and very few 2022s show excessive alcohol”. He points to wines from the Right Bank’s limestone and deeper clay soils as “highlights of the vintage” – having retained “an incredible sense of freshness and purity while showing the inherent ripeness and power of the vintage”, although he finds Pomerol “slightly more erratic”. In his view, the satellite appellations have produced a “number of terrific wines” – with Castillon producing many “that rival the best from Saint-Emilion”. He compares the year to a blend of 2020 and 2018, or a mix of 2005 and 2010, with a little 2009 here and there. They are, he feels, “ripe, concentrated, sumptuous wines that have a real ‘wow’ factor”. Dunnuck’s highlights: Montrose, Mouton Rothschild, Haut-Bailly, La Conseillante, Larcis-Ducasse, Les Carmes Haut-Brion, Cos d’Estournel, Léoville Las Cases, Vieux Château Certan, Pétrus, Pichon Comtesse, Léoville Poyferré Read Dunnuck’s full report, notes and scores JANE ANSON – INSIDE BORDEAUX  Anson offered early coverage of the growing conditions and yields – ahead of tasting the wines – but her final reports don’t delve much into the detail of the year on its own, instead focusing on tasting notes and the methodology of her scoring. She is one of few critics to mainly offer firm scores rather than bands (apart from when there’s a chance of 100 points, which she doesn’t like to offer to unfinished wines), something she argues is most useful for those deciding on whether or not to buy. As her scores highlight (with five potential 100-pointers on the Right Bank, and two on the Left, but none for dry or sweet whites), she feels it’s a stronger year for reds than whites. She highlights the high levels of tannin and colour, as well as alcohols – noting that because of the latter she has erred on the side of caution with her drinking windows. She found the second wines stronger in the northern Médoc generally, and notes how producers used very different approaches to the vintage. On the Right Bank, she emphasises the advantage of being on Saint-Emilion’s limestone plateau, and that Pomerol offers “muscular swaggering style” this year. She pulls out a selection of wines as value buys, which we’ve listed as her highlights below. Anson’s highlights: Laroque, Saintayme, Peymouton, Bel-Air, Haut-Simard, Feytit-Clinet, Le Rey les Rocheuses, Laurence, Petit Bocq, Roquetaillade la Grange, Cantelys, Ferrande, Angludet, Mejean, De Pez, Fonbadet, Haut-Bages Libéral, Domaine les Sadons, Finegrave, La Fleur Lauga, Larrivaux, Bel Air Gloria, Cap Leon Veyrin, G d’Estournel, G de Guiraud, Charmes-Godard, Clos Floridène, L’Exuberance Blanc Read Anson’s full report, notes and scores LISA PERROTTI-BROWN MW – THE WINE INDEPENDENT  With some major releases arriving earlier than anticipated, Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW initially published a “teaser” article on the year, with notes and scores for wines that had been released or were set to be in the coming days, including more detail on Cheval Blanc, Angélus, the Barton stable and Beychevelle. In her notes on early releases, Perrotti-Brown writes that 2022 was “a faith-affirming vintage for Bordeaux growers” – proving that the region could handle climate change. She highlights the surprising consistency from the year, as well as “a luminosity… that defies what we thought we knew about Bordeaux varieties”. With “its myriad of earthy, nuanced, soft-spoken, shimmery expressions”, it’s “a vintage that Bordeaux fans and serious collectors will want to seek out”. In her full report, released a week later, Perrotti-Brown declares 2022 “a classic, great Bordeaux vintage”. Echoing our findings, she notes that there are no rules in this vintage – picking dates varied significantly, and yet drastically different approaches resulted in excellent wines. She believes that a minority of wines (less than 10% of what she tasted) were acidified which is not in itself problematic, but where it has been done poorly, it shows. She also argues that the record-high percentages of press wine leads to a ruggedness to the tannin structure of some wines. Despite these two quibbles, she was “surprised by how consistent [she] found the wines from top to bottom”, in terms of quality – but she feels, like Galloni, that the heterogeneity of the vintage comes through in the style of the wines. Overall, however, she finds the wines fuller-bodied, high in tannin and quite high in alcohol, but with no dried-fruit character, instead showing impressive bright, red fruit and florals – even if the acidity is relatively low. Stand-out appellations are tricky, but she points to Saint-Emilion’s limestone plateau and areas off it, as well as parts of Castillon, Fronsac and Entre-Deux-Mers with similar bedrock. She writes: “There are many beautiful wines from the Right Bank and Pessac-Leognan, but the top wines of the Médoc are astonishingly great in 2022. If you love Cabernet Sauvignon, you may want to pay special attention to this vintage because the results, in some cases, are mind-blowing.” Perrotti-Brown highlights that the vintage allowed “properties on the peripheries of ‘great terroir’” to thrive this year – and she pulls out a list of estates falling in this category that are likely to offer good value in 2022, which we’ve featured as her highlights below. Perrotti-Brown’s highlights: Branas Grand Poujeaux, Cantemerle, Cantenac Brown, Capbern, Clos Cantenac, Clos de Sarpe, Clos du Clocher, Clos Lunelles, Cos Labory, Couhins-Lurton, D’Arce, De Carles, Haut Carles, De Pez, Fonroque, Fontenil, Fourcas Hosten, Grand-Puy-Lacoste, Gros Caillou, Le Promenoir, Haut-Bages Monpelou, Haut-Simard, Jean Faure, Kirwan, La Mouline, La Mouline Totem, La Rose Perrière, La Vieille Cure, Lafon-Rochet, Lassegue, Latour-Martillac, Les Trois Croix, L’If, Malescasse, Marjosse, Maucaillou, Mauvesin Barton, Montlandrie, Meyney, Pavillon Rouge, Phélan-Ségur, Poesia, Potensac, Siran, Tour Bayard, Tour Bayard l’Angelot, Tour Saint-Christophe, Vermont, Cuvée Prestige Read Perrotti-Brown’s full report, notes and scores on The Wine Independent NEAL MARTIN – VINOUS After the requisite satirical introduction, Martin launches into his report emphasising his frustration at estates’ insistence that he tastes at the château itself, rather than at larger tastings – something he feels is under the belief that it will lead to higher scores. He argues that the anticipated vintage is subject to some fairly typical hyperbole. Although he emphasises that the vines seemed “in verdant rude health” prior to harvest, he’s not convinced that the heat and drought had no impact – as some producers, he suggest, argue. He references the increased use of press wine on the Left Bank, something he attributes to the influence of superstar consultant Eric Boissenot. As to the wines themselves, he seems reluctant to offer glowing praise, but writes that, “The crème de la crème is blessed with kaleidoscopic aromatics, intense fruit, finely-sculpted tannins, structure, elegance and length. Above all, contrary to what the growing season implied, they are suffused with freshness.” These are wines that “dazzle”. He feels however that – and contrary to others – that “terroir is not the be-all and end-all” but instead “a guiding hand” which results in “a partial flattening of the hierarchical pyramid”. Although he sings the praises of the best wines in 2022, he caveats this by saying some wines are “sweet ‘n’ sour”. This he attributes to “human error” and picking dates in particular, with the phenolic and sugar ripeness not always matching up. He feels that it was a season that demanded producers’ “A game”. He found Left and Right Bank are fairly equal in the year, but Saint-Julien was a particular standout. He finds the wines “unabashedly floral”, perfumed and black- rather than red-fruited. He highlights the powdered texture of the tannins in the vintage, as well as the unexpected freshness in the best wines. Most importantly, he emphasises that these are wines for long-term ageing.
