A broadband range of flavours on the nose ... but then the palate is missing something; the fruit character seems intact, but there isn’t quite enough oomph and follow-through – the vintage suffered from excess rain, apparently. Such promise on the nose though! (RH)

Colour almost deeper than the 1998 (because of the unusual 15 per cent Cabernet deepening the Tinto Fino aka Tempranillo?). Very mellow rich, supple nose. Spicy, high VA. Lovely nose but a bit austere on the start of the palate. Velvety middle but very dry on the finish. (JR)
The dense ruby/purple-colored 1997 Valbuena reveals a deep, sweet nose of black fruits intermixed with earth, leather, smoke, and fruit cake. There is sensational texture on the palate, seamlessly integrated tannin and acidity, and moderate quantities of oak. While young, it is already showing exceptionally well. Anticipated maturity: now-2015. Importer: a Christopher Cannan Selection, various American importers including Michael Skurnik, Syosset, NY; tel. (516) 677-9300 and Diamond Wine Merchants, Oakland, CA; tel. (510) 567-9897
Bright medium ruby. Slightly roasted aromas of plum, tobacco leaf and loam, plus the tarry/vegetal complexity often shown by this bottling. Rich and layered in the mouth, with subtle sweetness; good density leavened by very firm acids. Falls a bit short on the back end, which shows some lemony acidity and toothdusting, slightly dry tannins.
